If there's a tie, the winner of the coin toss/straw drawing/picking of cards receives the Returning Officer's casting vote and is elected by a majority of one vote. That's the law. why is there casting vote never included in their total? It is included in the result. You should not see the result showing an actual tie.

I was thinking this myself, luckily no one will be affected as it's between Conservatives and Labour (who no one predicted to win). Not so. It makes a difference between those who predicted Conservative and those who went for Independent. Anyway, this probably should be for the Prediction thread. (And David, above, is probably right). Yes those who predicted an Independent win would get 10 faults whereas those who predicted a Conservative win would get 5 faults if we were to apply, in reverse, the same principle that applies when people predict a draw between two candidates and one of those candidates wins. However only one candidate can win and that will be the candidate who wins the toss of the coin

When Andrew Teale posted the results from the Wheathamstead election earlier this week where the Conservative & Lib Dem polled the same number of votes it was shown as a tie

Right enough, was thinking along the lines that as the Conservative won it doesn't impact as no one predicted Labour but badly worded. And yes, hopefully we can get clarity on it for the future.

It was drawn to our attention recently that an actual tie was exactly how such a result (in Wheathampstead) was presented on the St Albans website www.stalbans.gov.uk/council-and-democracy/elections/electionresults/districtresults/sadc-2006.aspxI can see you point from a legalistic perspective but from the point of view providing accurate information I'm grateful to them for taking the approach they have here (though they probably should have indicated that the official result actually had the lib Dems on 1133 votes in this case)

We seem to be repeatedly rather fortunate in Thurrock Still quite an encouraging vote share for Labour, I'd have thought; it's the sort of place that they ought to be very competitive in but in a lot of cases have been pushed into 3rd place by UKIP over recent years. They're a bit lucky IMO in that UKIP have imploded without Labour needing to do much. (In interests of fairness, I expect the LDs to pick up some "None of the Above" Kippers in e.g. the Wezvengland.)

Given that we had never even stood a candidate in the Ridgway ward of Chesham, it was a decent result and I hope the local Labour party can do some work and win it next time. However there really is a lesson here about getting into the culture of not running a candidate. Way back in my teenage years we held a county seat in Chesham and held the Pond Park ward which is most of Ridgway with ease. I know things change but this is not an area which should return Conservative councillors
