sigh....it depends what you mean by 'done well'. It has operated within the current liberal democratic political boundaries in a relatively competent fashion. If thats all you desire, then Germany has indeed done very well indeed. Let's put it another way, Mike. Who's done better? And yes, I am being typically centrist and liberal, but I'll take relative competence ahead of e.g. Venezuelan clusterfuck or, to be less contentious, Hollande's presidency of France. If "done well" is to be measured against some perfect imaginary government that has never existed then yes, we liberal centrists do tend to go for the proven OK over fantasy. I may have agreed with you at one time, but if we can't do any better than that, then I'd rather give up politics altogether. Germany is pleasant, but oh, so dull.....

If thats all you desire, then Germany has indeed done very well indeed. Building a stable, democratic state with a strong economy, reliable public services and high levels of pay and education are all pretty good measures of doing well! The pensions are terrible, though... ... and very weak on support for Venezuala and the Palestinians.

Today mayoral RunOffs were held in Sayony, also in Görlitz. In a 30.000-town next to Poland and close to Czechia, not exactly a HotBed of thriving economy, between CDU and - AfD. Of course with lots of media-attention, incl. some HollyWood-starlets threatening to cancel filming there (it wasn't much bombed in WWII and has a lovely CityCenter). It ended in 54.6% for the CDU-man (who is from Romania) -so obviously a clear result, but not as clear, as most (me included) had expected.

Obviously tobacco is much cheaper in Poland as there were 3 tobacconists within 100 yards of the footbridge over the river which acts as the border.

I'm not familiar with that area, but it sounds a similar story to Sebnitz and the Czech border region.

VotingBehaviour of HomoSexuals in 2017, on Immigration and on social equality-vs.-liberty: These look interesting but the images are too small (and the text too German) to make sense of. Are you able to offer some kind of summary of the analysis ?

Second picture: Vote 2017 Third picture: "Social equality is more important than individual liberty"

The first round of SPD's MembershipVote on the new leadership is over. Scholz&woman "won" it with 23% ahead of WalterBorjahn&woman at 21% (who are basically representing NRW). Will be difficult for him, who is hated by the left wingers, to prevail in the second round (counted on December 8th). Here are the results: de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wahl_zum_SPD-Vorsitz_2019

Tomorrow/today will happen elections in some cities, too:
- Mainz, governed by SPD for 70 years
- Kiel, the same applies, but for 73 years (the first SPD-mayor in 1946 - during the Weimar-Republic Kiel had had a DVP-mayor, who supported the Kapp-coup - became later JusticeMinister in Austria), but interrupted by CDU during the Schröder-era 2003-2009 (and an interim 1996/7)
- Halle/Saale, where a RunOff will take place between the high favorite, an Independent (exSPD) getting 44% in the first round, and a LEFT-candidate (25%) endorsed by GREENS and SPD (!).

Don't say, that SPD cannot win anymore:
Kiel: 2/3 for the SPD-incumbent
Mainz: 41% SPD-inc., 32% Ind., 22% Greens, 3% Left; clear, who will win
Halle: 61% incumbent Independent (exSPD), 39% Left (endorsed by SPD)

Everywhere elections are postponed - except in Bavaria, where local ones were Held today. Interesting will be, whether the GREENS will have achieved a BreakThrough in the cities, replacing SPD.
