Another reasonably busy February Thursday coming up on the 8th with seven more elections, 3 on the South coast of which one is in Brighton and two in Weymouth, then 3 more in Staffs including deja vu in Stretton, then going north to Eden to round off.

I realise a committed a cardinal sin above when I referred to the two Dorset by elections as coming from Weymouth. They are indeed from Weymouth and Portland DC but I should have guessed from the names of the wards that they would be on the island. Portland has in fact three wards imaginatively named Underhill, Tophill West and Tophill East, so on Feb 8th two-thirds of this determinedly independent-minded (though not necessarily Independent-minded) island is going to the polls.

None. Where the Greens have won it's with very well run focused local campaigns rather than appearing to be independent.

Codsall is very safe Tory territory. Traditional Tory and nouveaux riche. Even stayed Tory in 1995.

Part of Powell's constituency is now in the S Staffs district I think but pretty sure Codsall was never included. I seem to recall that oddly Tettenhall was not a part of his constituency, but perhaps Pete David or another expert could confirm or deny that. According to Wolverhampton SW’s Wiki page these are the parishes that have made up the Constituency since it’s creation in 1950: 1950–1955: The County Borough of Wolverhampton wards of Blakenhall and St John's, Graiseley, Penn, St George's, St Mark's and Merridale, St Matthew's, and St Philip's. 1955–1974: As above plus Park. 1974–1983: The County Borough of Wolverhampton wards of Graiseley, Merry Hill, Park, Penn, St Peter's, Tettenhall Regis, and Tettenhall Wightwick. 1983–2010: The Metropolitan Borough wards as named above 2010–present: The City of Wolverhampton wards as named above

I don't think any part of the historic constituency has been pushed into S Staffs, if anything the reverse. From the above, Tettenhall did not become part of the constituency until Powell had gone.

Worth perhaps commenting on the Con/Ind battle on Eden Council (I was tempted to write in the Garden of Eden as its quite a tale of loss of innocence!):
There has been a steady drift from Indy majority to Conservative majority. In 2003 there were 28 Indies, 5 Tories and 4 LibDems. Four years later it was 19/14/5.By 2011 the Conservatives were the largest party, with 16 to 13 Indies and 9 LibDems. By 2015 the Conservatives had control with 21 to 10 Independents and 7 LDs.
Back in 2003 the only outright Tory ward was Hartside (their other 4 members had a share of 2-member wards). It would be remarkable if the Indies could start to row back from here. Difficult to know what the intervention of a Green could do to that dynamic? Paradise Regained?
