Could someone please explain to me what the expenses of not doing something are? In my experience, they are incurred after a lapse of time, or not at all. Why should an MP's be different? Far be it from me to defend the IRA's MPs, and I don't think they should be paid expenses, but not taking their seats does not mean that they do nothing.

Which brings us back to the point in hand, IS Mr. McGuiness going to resign his Westminster seat this side of the general election?

How does resigning in December make a winter by-election less likely than resigning in June?

I was unable to follow his logic here, too. In fact, you're probably more likely to have unpleasant weather after Christmas than before it, going by most winters.

In a curious development Sinn Féin have selected Francie Molloy, their 61 year old Coalisland based, Stormont Deputy Speaker as their candidate for the by-election. Personally I would have thought they would have chosen a younger councillor or even Declan Kearney who doesn't hold an elected office for them. www.belfasttelegraph.co.uk/news/politics/sinn-fein-chooses-francie-molloy-as-mid-ulster-candidate-16249949.htmlI can't post links to hand but internet chatter and consensus from political hacks is that Patsy McGlone MLA will run for the SDLP and Ian McCrea MLA will do the same for the DUP but obviously Molloy will win in a canter.

Well of course no Sinn Feiner will take their seat, so the assembly is where their talent will want to go and shine.

Presumably SF's main focus is on the Assembly so they want their up-and-coming younger politicians to go there? To have a Shinner nominated for election to Westminister is becoming a pre-retirement gift. Rather like the Northern Ireland portfolio from Westminster under Thatcher!

The Northern Ireland portfolio in the 70's and 80's was a poisoned chalice of a cabinet position. Nowadays it is relatively unimportant and very minor.

"I have served formal notice of my resignation from the position of MP for Mid-Ulster with immediate effect." (My emphasis)
Oh heck, not another round of this...

"I have served formal notice of my resignation from the position of MP for Mid-Ulster with immediate effect." ( My emphasis) Oh heck, not another round of this... I was suspecting this will now become the formula: SF "resign" by writing to the Speaker, and the letter is passed to the Treasury, who then eventually announce the appointment to an office of profit.

Why should John Bercow have to play messenger boy?

No reason at all. But it looks like one of those informal compromises that becomes traditional over time.

Why should John Bercow have to play messenger boy? You might well ask why should you pretend to apply for a job that doesn't really exist in order to resign, the answer to which is more or less summed up by Tangent above
