George Galloway says: "If you would like to know who our candidate for the up coming Croydon North by-election is going to be, watch my pod cast "Good night with George Galloway" this Sunday on the Molucca Red youtube channel at 6pm. Its going to be big!!!".

[I think Steve Reed has to be a favourite here otherwise why would a council leader bother ? Only someone who is silly enough not to live in Croydon would write something as silly as that. The reason why Steve Reed has applied is because he is silly enough not to live in Croydon, and is therefore silly enough to think that he has a reasonable chance to get the nomination. My guess (and it is only a guess) is that the probability is Valerie Shawcross 50%, Louisa Woodley 40%, and someone else (i.e. a non-Croydon person) 10%. The only reason I have estimated the probability of a non-Croydon Labour candidate as being as high as 10% is to allow for the fact that members of the Labour Party are, being Labour, ipso facto, silly; and to allow for the possibility that there may be strands of opinion within the Croydon North CLP which I might not be aware of. As far as I am aware, both Valerie and Louisa are well-known and well-liked in the Croydon Labour Party, but I can't exclude the possibility that there might be some people who might think that Valerie Shawcross is a careerist politician, or too smooth, or too Blairite, or not left-wing enough, or that Louisa Woodley is too left-wing, or too whatever. Or, such concerns about the two (and therefore desires for a non-Croydon candidate) might be completely non-existent.

I'm sure that the actual announcement will absolutely fail to live up to the hype, but just for the sake of speculation, what are the biggest names that the not so gorgeous George could have tempted to stand under the Respect banner?

It couldn't be Hugo Chavez himself, could it? Could it? No, if it's really big it's got the be Fidel.

I was more thinking along the lines of somebody with the initials KL but I'm not sure there's room for both those egos in the same party.

In the event John does stand I reckon in a show of forum solidarity we should all commit to make 5 telephone canvas calls on his behalf. To whom? Random people, like the PPI advert spam junk phone calls? That might be fun. See how many people hang up, or say "globule" or something else.

If they say 'globule', then that's one vote you've got sewn up.
To do it properly, random people spread randomly around the country (and indeed world) should be telephone canvassed for the Croydon North by-election.

There's no disqualification on either side over one person being a London Assembly member and a Member of Parliament.
Nobody can legally prevent an Assembly member from resigning if they wish to do so, but it's legitimate for a party to put pressure on an Assembly member wishing to resign to delay the action until such time as the resulting byelection would cause the least trouble.

If a constituency seat changes hands in a by-election, does this lead to a re-calculation of the top-up seats? I suppose not, but should it? After all, the system is aimed at achieving some form of proportionality, and seats changing hands in by-elections could undermine that.

The probability of me being a candidate has been drifting upwards from about 60% a few days ago to about 90% now.

Which part of Croydon do you live in John? Would you vote for yourself?
