So why has the MP for Skipton & Ripon chosen to act on this, and why now? Obviously the convention that the outgoing party moves the writ is irrelevant here. He's the Government Chief Whip. I assume that the date has been agreed unofficially with Sinn Féin.

The latter is the Party Formerly Known As Cannabis Is Safer Than Alcohol.
Donnelly has been the Alliance candidate here at all Westminster & Stormont elections since 2015. His best result was for the Assembly in 2017 when he got 1252 votes 2.8%. That was Alliance's best vote since the creation of the constituency.

IIRC this is a new registration, presumably because of the massive fines for non-submission the old CISTA received. Not sure how effective it's been in bypassing fines or if this is a case of other activists taking over the running.

All five candidates live in the constituency as well. Nothing to see here, folks-a Sinn Fein hold is practically a foregone conclusion.

In both the last Westminster and Stormont elections Unionists were closer to two quotas than Nationalists to four so how the by-election stacks up will be of note. Also whether Alliance can get their best ever result here is an open question.

Firstly I wouldnt look at Westminster elections and try and apply quotas to the results as people are more likely to tactically vote, secondly in the last Stormont election you are probably leaving out the ex-SF candidate who stood as an independent and gained almost 900 votes

The DUP would field two candidates in any future stormont election if their 2017 Westminster vote is replicated. With good balancing they will run the SDLP very close for the 5th seat

The SDLP are safe here for the foreseeable future
