There , I've set up a thread and only 3 elections this week so a piece of cake! If nobody else fancies putting out the basic data I will try to do so later today, and if I have to hopefully there won't be as many errors as last week, when struggling with 14, and the complexities of the Scottish ones ,was a real challenge!

What makes Bucklow St Martins so strongly Labour? Even in 2008 it was not remotely close.

thank you -  I am doing a lot of this to learn and I'm certainly learning by making a fool of myself in front of people who know a lot more than me. Maybe soon  they will give up on me and do it themselves

Is Partington a council estate?

I do hope than the inevitable Labour win next Thursday is reported as a Labour hold. It would be quite ridiculous to claim it was a Labour gain when the Councillor whose resignation caused this by-election was elected as a Labour Councillor. I don't know if there are conventions regarding how gains/holds are reported after defections.

Partington is a dirty old chemical industry town but also has overspill estates. The old Bucklow ward was majority local authority owned housing back in 2001. And the St Martins area of Sale is pretty grotty too - the old St Martins ward was alwatys pretty safely Labour

Gerald Luxton is a very well-known Town Councillor for part of this ward and was also for many years an MDDC Councillor for this three-member District Council ward. Because of the advantage gained by political parties in 2015 due to the General Election turnout, he unexpectedly lost by just 11 votes to Jonathan Smith, who stood as UKIP, who later went Independent and whose resignation caused this by-election. I'd be amazed not to see Gerald Luxton back on MDDC after this by-election.

A local point of interest is that Labour had, previously, won a seat in this ward in 2003 .... that was Labour's only victory that year and, indeed, Labour haven't won since, here or anywhere else, in MDDC elections.

Thank you for that useful information- I had seen there had been a Luxton for a long time here and losing the seat in 2015, but all the records I had seen said "E.Luxton" so I had assumed a different family member. I believe though that Luxton had been the lower rated Independent where we are dealing with 2-member contests

I notice that on the Andrew's Previews summary, Andrew Teale has the "no description" candidate down as Independent - I have re=checked the council website and the description box is definitely left blank. Am I missing something and does it matter? Some people I think will put ND votes and Ind votes in different places?
