General observations: The independent in Crawcrook and Greenside stood in Ryton last year and got a respectable result. Don’t see any reason why he would switch ward. The Greens are targeting Bridges, I doubt they will gain it this year. The Conservative target ward (and I use the term loosely) has a new candidate who stood 5 times in Gateshead where he lives.

Council elections letter from Labour hand delivered today. Send a message to the Tories and make sure you vote Labour for mayor and PCC. No mention of local issues at all. It’s from my local councillor, but the closest it gets personalised in the body is saying that she wants to “continue” being my councillor. Interestingly, the email is for the new constituency boundaries.

Will be interested to see whether the issues around Gateshead FC being barred from the National League promotion play-offs affect the outcome in any wards. There does seem to be palpable anger around. To compile with EFL rules - and to stand a chance of getting promotion to League Two if successful in the National League playoffs starting this evening - there was a requirement of a 10 year security of tender required on EFL club's stadium. Gateshead Council which owns the stadium did not provide this - as they are in process of transferring ownership of the site to a third party (as they say the stadium runs up a deficit of over £800k) - and they did not want to make any commitments if they could not transfer the site. www.chroniclelive.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/gateshead-fc-play-hopes-rocked-29034318www.chroniclelive.co.uk/news/north-east-news/gateshead-fc-national-league-play-29040781

Most of the relatively marginal wards are out on the periphery of the borough where you'll find few Gateshead fans, though it will probably help the Lib Dems a bit in Saltwell. If the Greens are putting effort into Bridges ward, I suspect they'll make hay out of it too (but Bridges is the most transient ward in the borough so I'm not sure how much resonance this issue will have, especially as they're trying to overturn a huge majority from third).

What's the average attendance at Gateshead home games? It's varied over the last few seasons but generally about 1,000 (increasing a bit when we're on a good run). This has been fairly consistent for the last ten years or so - before that it was low to mid hundreds. As a League club in the 1950s, attendances were a good deal higher - typically several thousand and comparable to the likes of Rochdale, Walsall, or Halifax. There is a fair amount of football support in the borough, but most of it goes across the river (and much of the remainder doesn't particularly want to watch football at a cold windswept athletics stadium in the middle of an industrial estate).

Old hands may recall the single issue Valley Party that stood candidates at the 1990 Greenwich council elections - protesting about Charlton Athletic still not having a ground of their own half a dozen years after they just survived their winding up scare, and urging the Labour run council to resolve this. They didn't win any seats themselves, but it is thought they caused a few Labour councillors/candidates to lose contests they might otherwise have won. And before too long they achieved their aim, with Charlton returning to their old ground during the 1992/93 season.

Local authorities helping out football clubs has a pretty chequered history doesn't it? And nowadays few councils would want to take on liabilities and non-commercial lets.
You do find that sporting groups can get involved in politics. Amazingly the athletics club in Cambridge ran a couple of candidates in one round of council elections (a retiring Labour councillor was one candidate) to try to force the council to provide an athletics track - they didn't like using the rather crude university track, heritage or not. They didn't get anywhere with the council and didn't force any unexpected defeats. I'm not sure whether they got any joy through other routes. As a councillor then I couldn't imagine a tactic less likely to persuade me to be supportive.

Most finished bottom of the poll but Luke Kirton won a seat in Brentford ward (beating future frontbencher Seema Malhotra).
