Old hands may recall the single issue Valley Party that stood candidates at the 1990 Greenwich council elections - protesting about Charlton Athletic still not having a ground of their own half a dozen years after they just survived their winding up scare, and urging the Labour run council to resolve this. They didn't win any seats themselves, but it is thought they caused a few Labour councillors/candidates to lose contests they might otherwise have won. And before too long they achieved their aim, with Charlton returning to their old ground during the 1992/93 season. They polled n10% or so across the borough, and most significantly, the votes of Valley party candidates were probably key to Labour losing Eynsham to the SDP, which saw the Chair of Planning, who was I presume seen by the Valley Party as the key villain, being defeated. His reflections are found here forum.charltonlife.com/discussion/34210/the-valley-party-twenty-years-on-part-2-the-council-simon-oelman-interview

I seem to remember that the casualties included the Labour chair of planning, who was one of their main targets, and the SDP (old style) won a seat .

Ah, that's probably because i posted that on my phone at 4.30am in the morning on my break from my eight hour night shift. My powers of observation aren't at their height at that time.

I also lost my seat in Greenwich in 1990. I was on the planning committee at the time and voted against Charlton's proposals. A number of people who had previously signed my nomination papers voted for the Valley Party. I regained the seat in 1994.

you seem to have been the only Lib Dem to gain a seat in Greenwich in that election

Saw a Labour stakeboard in Greenside. Didn’t see anything from the Greens as we drove through.

You probably won't remember, but you gave me a lift home from Farnham during the Surrey South West by-election in 1984. It was my first ever by-election

Yes. After gaining in 1994 I lost again in 1998. Shortly after I retired and moved back to Yorkshire where I continued my political career.

Do you remember going round Farnham with a callow teenager at his first by-election, and giving him a lift back to Bexley afterwards??
