Just to note in addition to the above that the Green in Castle (defending next year) was elected as Labour.

Of the six councillors who have resigned from Labour, four have terms running to 2026 and two run to 2024.
Maya Evans - Hollington
Ali Roark - Tressell
Hollington ward was still strongly Labour in 2022 while Tressell was won by the Greens on a big swing.

Maya Evans - Hollington Ali Roark - Tressell Hollington ward was still strongly Labour in 2022 while Tressell was won by the Greens on a big swing. That's The Notorious Maya Evans... Hollington is core Labour territory, as should Tressell be (for a comparator for Green held wards elsewhere think Katesgrove in Reading or one of the northern Solihull wards) but as it has already gone Green once they'll likely pick up the second seat anyway. Hastings Labour have always been particularly unimpressive and unambitious (and rather clumsy) as an administration, Hastings Conservatives are a shambles so opportunity really knocks now for the Greens (and on a smaller scale for us, if we can get a foothold back on the council in places the Greens can't reach).

Since the initial announcement two more Labour councillors having defected to the Independent group. Nigel Sinden (Silverhill) and Mike Turner (Baird) bringing the Hastings Independents to 8. They are now larger than the Labour group now have 7. Strange that they've started their own group when you have a well-organised local Green party as a left-of-Labour protest vote. Especially when it features Maya Evans who stood for the Greens as a candidate a decade ago for the council.

Wouldn't that lead to a Conservative leader, as they are the largest group?

Not necessarily, the leader would be whoever could command a majority in the council chamber, which wouldn't always be the leader of the largest single party

From the press articles I've seen, this is a Labour-only initiative. Easy to see why they've done it, if the entire cabinet defects. But if they haven't negotiated behind the scenes, there must be a risk of humiliation here, that the other parties turn up to the meeting and say they are happier with this cabinet than the rest of the Labour party, and leave them in place? Could rebound badly if they haven't got some assurances behind the scenes. I can't find anything that the other parties have said about it - has anyone seen anything?

At tonight's special council meeting the old cabinet announced their resignations so there was no VONC in the end. Julia Hilton (Green Group Leader) was elected as caretaker leader until May and will lead a cabinet of Green and Hastings Independents. In her statement she said she had wanted to form an all party administration but Labour and Conservative groups did not want to join. The full cabinet will be announced in the coming days. All Councillors will be invited to cabinet meetings and given the opportunity to contribute. www.hastings.gov.uk/my-council/cm/?v=4005849

Basically it's a revival of the Labour-Green coalition of 2022 that was struck down by Labour HQ but with the Greens being the senior party instead and only the defecting Labour councillors as part of Hastings independents taking part in it.

I appreciate that defections have hastened the process (no pun intended) but it is remarkable that in 2018 every councillor elected was either Labour or Conservative and now neither will form part of the administration.

As of today, 5 March, 4 of the 7 Labour councillors elected in 2021 and coming up for re-election this May, are now sitting as Independents, viz
Sabina Arthur (Braybrooke) Claire Carr (Castle) Maya Evans (Hollington) Ali Roark (Tressell)

www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cv2yr4rp382oI accept that I have a fairly stern view of council business and, even when I was one, wasn’t keen on councils debating subjects that lay beyond their powers or didn’t relate to government action on local government business. This looks like being a pretty bitter round of elections here.
