Labour is having an open selection for the candidacy here as Onkar Sahota has been triggered. He lost the automatic reelection vote in Ealing Central and Acton CLP, Ealing North CLP and Hayes and Harlington CLP. Ruislip, Northwood and Pinner CLP decided it couldn't care less and didn't meet. Ealing Southall CLP and Uxbridge and South Ruislip CLP are suspended and can't vote. At least one affiliate voted for open selection but it wasn't revealed by the press which one. Ealing Cllr Bassam Mahfouz has emerged as one of the challengers. That doesn’t bode well for Labour’s chances here, IMO. How will it make the slightest difference? Genuine question, just yesterday we were discussing the almost complete invisibility of AMs.

Genuine question, just yesterday we were discussing the almost complete invisibility of AMs. It shows the perils of these crazily large constituencies. They can be known and active, but only ever in a couple of parts of the seat. As for managing the local party, as we can see demonstrated here that’s for the birds.

You've said that about literally everything else that has occurred in relation to this constituency. The main thing we've learned from this is how much weight to give to your opinion.

I'm working backwards from my conclusion that I think the Tories will gain this along with Brent & Harrow. I said that it didn't bode well for Labour because it suggestions some divisions within CLPs and also the incumbent here is a decent performer so I think replacing him with someone else as candidate would cost Labour votes. He's also Sikh and this seat has a fairly decent Sikh population. His candidacy might help reduce swings to the Tories among Indian voters here possibly. That's it, that's all I wanted to say.

Bassam Mahfouz has been around a long while and was Labour’s unsuccessful candidate in Ealing Central and Acton in the 2010 general election. I don’t think he would do any better or worse than Onkar Sahota. Weld needs to stop fixating on the 2021 results as there has been a humongous swing to Labour since then and there is no polling evidence that any specific local factors will be anything like enough to counteract that. Indeed Mahfouz as a Muslim (albeit not one noted for being religious) may help Labour keep some Muslim votes that could have been in danger. That is however jumping the gun as it’s perfectly possible Sahota survives the reselection process.

The Labour shortlist is:
Jasbir Anand Bassam Mahfouz
Note sitting AM Dr Onkar Sahota was seeking reselection but has not been shortlisted.

Labour would not have based a shortlisting decision on that though. You are correct about which religion they all belong to

The incumbent was pro-ulez so that contributed to his deselection.

Did the rule change for this round or has it always been like that for Assembly members? Re: not automatic shortlisting for sitting AM who loses trigger ballot (unlike MPs who are automatically shortlisted for the open selection)

Bassam Mahfouz came to the UK from Lebanon as a child and I believe he is actually a Christian. He was educated at a Catholic school.

Liberal Democrat candidate is Kuldev Sehra. He is the PPC for Brentford & Isleworth, and has been a councillor in Richmond upon Thames, Whitton since 2022.
