Bury, Moorside ward: Annette McKay from Labour to Independent. Annette McKay is, as much as I recall, very involved with the local Irish community in Bury. CatholicLeft might know her?

That word that starts with 'm' is one we'll probably be hearing more of.

She is a very driven woman who has focussed almost totally on Ireland in recent years. Not sure how that plays in Moorside. Wonder why she has resigned from the party.

She's been making accusations of misogyny, at least one person has accused her of being a "TERF".

There certainly are TERFs and other anti trans-bigots out there, some of them unfortunately within the party. But as with AS and other derogatory tendencies, the tendency of some to indiscriminately label all they disagree with thus is not helpful.

So. TERFs are, in your view, anti Trans bigots? In what world could they not be considered ant-Trans bigots? In the same world that not believing Christians have a soul doesnt make someone an anti-Christian bigot. Refusing to believe someone else’s *belief* can never be a form of bigotry, no matter how fervently and devoutly that belief is held. TERFs dont *believe* that trans-women are literal women (the initial proposition is a *belief* as it cannot be measured). So, in fact, do about 98% of the world’s population. Many TERFs (but not all) also don’t think that trans-women should even be treated like women in society, which is probably not majority opinion in the West. Some TERFs also have a hostile and bigoted attitude towards all trans-women; but not all of them.

Should I go for the false equivalence that is so glaringly obvious it can be seen from Pluto, for your ludicrous claim that 98% of the world's population share in your view or for the wealth of scientific evidence that transgender people exist and that their claims to be the opposite gender to their body are genuine?

I'm not remotely surprised that a simple answer to a simple question on this issue has resulted in a somewhat hysterical reaction, as the one thing we have learned over the last year is that rational discussion on this issue simply isn't possible. (It's like communism in the 60s, drugs in the 80s, etc). I have no intention of feeding these trolls, so I'll just say: of course transgender people exist - nowhere did I write or even imply otherwise.

You can use anecdotal "evidence" to prove anything, of course......

Lynne Shelton, Heath ward, East Staffordshire BC - Con to Ind. www.derbytelegraph.co.uk/burton/tories-branded-a-total-disgrace-1968305Mainly due to outrage at deselection shenanigans across the Conservative group. It seems she has decided to not stand down as planned but will instead stand as an independent in May. The story here does go deeper - there is a huge rift in the association between those surrounding the Leader of the Council and those who remain pro-Andrew Griffiths MP (he of the 'daddy spanking' fame). It is no secret that the two can't stand each other. It seems the Executive of the association are using their powers to destablise Grosvenor by removing his supporters who also, surprise surprise, are critics of Griffiths. It is no coincidence that one of those deselected after 20 years made a public call on Griffiths to resign as the MP. Local politics - don' t you just love it.
