Here is some background to the by-elections in the Central and Stoodley wards of Todmorden Town Council in the Metropolitan Borough of Calderdale in West Yorkshire.
Labour are not defending their seat in Central ward and Stoodley ward is a Lib Dem gain from Con unopposed.
Todmorden Town Council comprises 18 members, elected from each of six wards as follows – Central (3), Cornholme (3), Langfield (2), Stansfield (3), Stoodley (4) and Walsden (3).
The council strengths were:
Elections on 3 May 2007: Lib Dem 17, Lab 1 Elections on 5 May 2011: Lab 8, Lib Dem 7, Con 2, Independent 1
Both Conservative councillors, Ian Cooper and Andrew Hartley, had stood without a description. Ian Cooper had been elected in 2008 as a Conservative in Todmorden ward to Calderdale Borough Council. Andrew Hartley in Walsden ward is shown as a Conservative on the town council website,
September 2012: Lab 7, Lib Dem 7, Independent 1, Con 1, Vacant 2
The Town Mayor is currently Lib Dem and the Deputy Mayor is Lab; the Chair of the General Purposes Committee is Independent and the Vice-Chair is Conservative.

The by-election on 25 October 2012 in Central ward is caused by the resignation of John Lockhart (Lab), submitted on 8 August 2012. The candidates are Independent and Lib Dem.
The by-election on 25 October 2012 in Stoodley ward is caused by the death of the Deputy Town Mayor, Ian Cooper (Con (No Description)), after a battle with cancer. A Lib Dem candidate has been returned unopposed.

There is a fifth by-election next week in the highly marginal Didcot All Saints ward of South Oxfordshire District, caused by the resignation of Terry Joslin (Lab) because of heart problems.
Terry Joslin was elected in this 2-seat ward in 2011 along with a Conservative. The second Conservative candidate was the runner up.
The candidates are Lib Dem, Lab and Con.

The result in All Saints ward on 3 May 2007 was: Con 708/691/642/635/593, Lab 565/547/524/513/506, Lib Dem 374 Elected: Con 5
The result in All Saints ward on 5 May 2011 was: Lab 709/665/650/607/597, Con 676/661/582/572/493, Lib Dem 272 Elected: Lab 3, Con 2

The Labour candidate appears to be new to the ward.
