It is very easy to get confused with some of these district council wards. Here in Wales for instance we have two Castles (Monmouthshire and Swansea), two Cymners (Neath and the Rhondda), two Gilfachs (Cearphilly and the Rhondda) and to make things very interesting we have two Llansantffraeds (Ceredigion has an e at the end and Powys had an I at the end). Indeed even in England, there's an Arley ward in North Warwickshire and an Arbury in Nuneaton and Bedworth

My favourite confusing ward name is "Tower Hamlets"

Elizabeth Atkins will be Labour candidate for Ashton ward, Preston. She stepped down last year to care for her husband, 100-year-old former Preston MP Ron Atkins.

Understand by-elections to fill both the Royston Heath and Hitchen Priory vacancies on North Hertfordshire DC will be held on 4 May.

The Kings Lynn & West Norfolk, Fairstead by-election will be on 11 May.
The Notice of Vacancy for Richmondshire, Reeth & Arkengarthdale will be issued later this week now that the funeral of the late Councillor has been held.

Will try and bottom the remaining vacancies in the morning.

Update Thursday morning:

Understand by-elections to fill both the Royston Heath and Hitchen Priory vacancies on North Hertfordshire DC will be held on 4 May.
- Notice of Elections now on website
Understand Sheffield, Southey by-election is on 4 May although new Council website does not have any information.

The position on South Derbyshire, Woodville is not clear

The re-run of Blackburn with Darwen, Higher Croft is still being considered but will not be on 4 May.
The Kings Lynn & West Norfolk, Fairstead by-election will be on 11 May.
The Notice of Vacancy for Richmondshire, Reeth & Arkengarthdale will be issued later this week now that the funeral of the late Councillor has been held.
Understand Julie Gunnell has not yet resigned as a Councillor in York, Micklegate.

Noted that South Derbyshire is advertising close of nominations on 11 April.

The Notice of Election was only placed on the website this afternoon (3 April) and nominations should close tomorrow - so they have a problem.

Nominations close on 4 April at 4pm for all the other elections taking place on 4 May - the English counties, the Welsh districts, the Mayoral elections, Doncaster, the Isles of Scilly, more than 100 other by-elections.

I think the South Derbyshire Returning Officer, Frank McArdle, has made a mistake.

I wonder if he's working from an old version of the timetable. It's certainly more convenient for everyone involved if the election is on 4 May, and while the erroneously short timetable might be the foundation of an election petition after the result, I would have thought the court would find that it was still conducted substantially according to law.
