Haggard de Toni is just too brilliant to be true. I think I may have spent two weeks of my young life there with the school cadet force, rushing about on what was then an army battle training school. If so it was interesting and very beautiful. Brings back memories of the best ward name poll ran here a few years ago, where Haggard de Toni won the East of England region. Oliver's Battery and Badger Farm ftw

A correction to the text: Christopher Boyle in South Heaton is Lib Dem, not UKIP. Apologies.

The South Heaton result is not a surprise. I turned up after watching today's racing (a man had to get his priorities right). We expected to finish third.

No outright gains or losses. Two good improvements in share for LD against one slippage; a bad night for UKIP.

The contrast between the Newcastle result and the one early in the year in Sunderland (where the LibDems started in a similarly "hopeless" position) is maybe instructive.

WTF??? As certain other posters here may recognise, however, the above comment was a contrast between a council where Labour are used to campaigning hard and were indeed in opposition pretty recently - and one where they have been in power for getting on for half a century and have several wards (like the one that fell in January) where they have barely had to work in the past to get elected. I would have thought this pretty obvious to anybody not determined to view everything through a certain ideological filter

What is really instructive is that when Labour are in opposition nationally anyone could consider a mere 12% drop in their vote as some sort of positive.

Some truth in that tbh, though Labour was dropping share in some local by-elections even at the height of Blairite dominance in the mid 90s. The fact that the LibDems actually fought a campaign here this time, after not bothering in the last few contests, meant their share was always likely to go up even without their uptick more generally.
