This took a while. Errors possible. Minor inconsistencies in rounding inevitable. But whatever: enjoy and/or discuss! Btw, I can explain most patterns if you ask.

Democrat in Northern Rockies area (ish)? Mostly ski resorts and also a few university towns. Much of that movement coming across from Nader (who e.g. polled as much as 15% in Missoula) actually. Additionally Gore's name was mud in the region with a very different sort of voter because of his stances on gun control and logging issues. It's actually surprising that there's not more blue there, except that obviously H.R.C. was never exactly liked either...

Democrat in Northern Rockies area (ish)? Guessing due to Gore doing terribly in the rural west, mostly due to his position on guns, maybe his environmentalism too. Plus I guess Johnson hurting trump more while Nader took from Gore could also explain some swing. Though the county which swung Dem the most in the area is Teton Wyoming, a wealthy ski resort area. Believe some of those counties in Montana have Native American reservations, so higher turnout than 2000 (even though Clinton had a huge turnout drop in NA counties from 2012).

Cook County, Minnesota stands out as an odd one.

Cook County, Minnesota stands out as an odd one. Touristy area (skiing again) largest town is Grand Marais which is very much an artsy/alternative kind of place. Nader over 10% in 2000.

Increased turnout in the black belt. - The stable Dem vote (compared to the rest of the state) in NW Arkansas? Why did Pueblo swing more sharply Republican than the other, more rural, Hispanic counties in South Colorado?

Overall Mississippi is pretty much unchanged. A lot the counties that swing to Clinton are majority black and many of them are quite small. Also a strong performance from Clinton in the Jackson suburbs but all this was off set by the coast and the north east being much stronger for the GOP than once were.

I knew that there were some skiing places up there but that description of Grand Marais was not one that I had heard.

Found out why Jefferson County, Iowa is quite the fun oddity. In 2000 the Natural Law Party candidate John Hagelin got over 14% there with Bush winning a plurality. The Maharishi University of Management (both the party and "university" have the same founder) is based in the county with Hagelin winning more than 20% of the vote in the 90s.
2000 George W. Bush 3,248 43.03% Albert Gore 2,863 37.93% John Hagelin 1,109 14.69% Ralph Nader 206 2.73%
2016 Donald J. Trump 3,748 45.95% Hillary Clinton 3,710 45.49% Jill Stein 256 3.14% Gary Johnson 246 3.02%

Republican trend in Massachusetts? Bristol, Worcester and Hampden counties are all old industrial areas a bit too far away from Boston to benefit from its higher education/tech economic success. Plymouth county is close enough to Boston to mostly benefit but has a certain Boston white flight element which counteracts that.

The stable Dem vote (compared to the rest of the state) in NW Arkansas? Prosperous, growing and urbanised area dominated by Walmart (which is based there, along with several other major players in transport and meat processing) and also historically Republican so less to lose.

Movement to Rep. In SE Texas Complete collapse of the Texas Democratic rural (white) working class vote, which, yes, was still very substantial as recently as 16yrs ago. That area is quite industrial in parts - petrochemicals towards the coast, timber and by-products further north - as well, which had bolstered it.

The divergence between New York's landward and seaward suburbs? The sort of middle class suburbanite who lives on Long Island is... er... culturally a bit different from the sort who lives in Westchester even if they're also earning well I.e. the rich parts of Westchester (it also contains Yonkers which...) are very much stereotypically Establishment, while Lawn Guyland is all eighth generation Italian and Irish Americans etc.

I know that Gore was 'continuity Bill' in some ways - but the fact that Arkansas doesn't look out of place at all is interesting to my mind.
Oh, and what's the random Blue spot in the middle of Tennessee - Nashville presumably?

Which county had the biggest Dem swing? Assuming Mingo, WV swung hardest to the Republicans? 60% Gore to 15% Clinton
