@pjones While this agrees with your point that it went down baldy on social media, his vote was the correct one imo. Bernie proposed importing drugs from Canada, but without meeting US safety standards. Really shows how social media means both sides react without actually getting the facts.

Safety standards is such a red herring here: it's not like the plan is to import from Gabon. No one can seriously suggest that drugs approved for use in Canada are less safe than US ones, especially given that lots of them are made in the States. Given the availability of basic painkillers by the thousand in the US, the ubiquity of pharmaceutical adverts on TV telling people to ask their physician for XYZ drug and the opioid epidemic that just isn't being tackled, it's rank hypocrisy.

The 2016 race was exhausting, even though I don't live in America.
I don't think I'm ready to talk about 2020 until about 2019.

Agree they will probably be safe, but still best to make sure. An amendment was offered by many of those opposed to the bill so I imagine it would have passed with their support. I do agree though it's rank hypocrisy, but that's America for you.

We've had this thread reported on the grounds it has been started way too far in advance. I have sympathy with this, but have no particular objection to it - after all, the 2016 thread was started in 2013 by @jimboo . Therefore, I am not proposing to delete it. However, what I would say is that any contributions to this thread should be wholly pertinent to the 2020 election, for instance candidates expressing an intention to run. If it is not wholly pertinent, please use the existing US politics thread thread. @pjones ' opening post, for example, ought to just have been posted there. Going forward, anything posted here that fits better elsewhere is liable to be moved - at least for the next couple of years!

Startd on the 6th of march and swanarcadian called it for the GOP on the 7th of March 2013, on Feb 22 2014 carlton43 indicated the GOP best chance would be if Hilary wins Dem nomination. We could have cleaned the bookies out. Well Jeb Bush certainly buggered it up as well.

Trump will not be president when this election takes place. That's my prediction and I'm sticking with it (removed by impeachment rather than assassination or other cause of death BTW).

Mike Pence 2nd term? No, he will be guilty by association to Trump despite his best efforts so the GOP's best chance will be someone completely different.

If Trump is impeached virtually the whole GOP will be considered guilty by association. Only the handful of major GOP figures who held out against Trump would have any hope of distancing themselves from him.

Though as this election has shown us, you can be completely divorced from virtually the entire party you're running for and still win...

If Trump is impeached virtually the whole GOP will be considered guilty by association. Only the handful of major GOP figures who held out against Trump would have any hope of distancing themselves from him. Trump is hardly going to go quietly the way Nixon did in 1974 (and indeed 1960). Richard Nixon's problem was that he was far too polite. Any impeachment attempt will be labelled a fraud and a conspiracy (maybe even a conspiracy done at the behest of a foreign power like the Chinese). Any major GOP figures who supports or who fails to oppose such an impeachment will have their names dragged through the mud to the point where they will be completely unelectable in any future GOP primary. If the GOP care at all about keeping majorities in the House, the Senate and about keeping the Presidency they had better make sure he isn't impeached. Well I partially agree with you. Nixon had sufficient respect for the nation and the Presidency to accept the inevitable and go in a manner that minimised the harm to both. Trump would have no restraint and would whip his followers up to a degree that would cause massive civil disorder. Therefore I consider impeachment fairly unlikely. It will only happen if Trump does something which is clearly an impeachable offence in the minds of a significant majority including a big chunk of GOP voters. If that happens the GOP are damned if they do and damned if they don't. They will be punished savagely either way.

Oh, that unsafe third-world country called Canada. There are actual legitimate problems in Canada with fake drugs, so even if the regulatory standards are the same/superior (which i believe will be nearly always), there would still be the risk of importing these fake drugs.

There's an issue with that here too, is the problem in Canada particularly marked? I admit to knowing very little about this.

It appears to be in the 100s of millions, if not more from what I've read. I support ending the ban on Canadian drug imports (an egregious example of crony capitalism), but you still need to make sure that they're safe.
