Very disappointing turnout, but Labour came surprisingly close if this is correct.

How very neat in surface appearances. Labour up by what Greens are down! Conservatives down by the share taken by UKIP! In that sort of settled Conservative part rural and part suburbia UKIP take from the Conservatives and not much from Labour. So safe not many bothered to turn out. Not a lot to learn here. Greens might be a bit disappointed? UKIP result looks quite good for a standing start in that sort of area............except it is such a low poll!! I think we ignore this one.

The electorate on the new boundary was 2,101 in 2015 whereas for the old boundaries it was likely to be somewhat over 3,000. My late mother lived in the St John's ward where Rory Shannon, tonight's Labour candidate, was an elected councillor 2011 to 2015. The Labour Party appeared to be very active there prior to and immediately after his election with leaflets and telephone canvassing even though she expressed little or no interest. St Johns saw 2 Conservatives elected unopposed in 2003, Conservative 797 / 750, Liberal Democrat 599, Labour 521 in 2007 and Conservative 760 / 591, Labour 646 (Shannon) / 588, Independent 426 in 2011. The Labour candidate in yesterday's election was most probably seen as a strong local person. In addition, the new Conservative candidate did poll well below his late running mate (703 versus 856) in 2011 who went on to defend the revised Norton seat whereas the new councillor did lose the Barnt Green & Hopwood ward to an Independent elected for the first time. Norton is a now single member ward with an electorate around 2,000. This has similar characteristics to several wards contested in 2016 which threw up surprising and probably unrepresentative results when considered against the national picture.

And prior to 2003 Norton was a three member ward - the only time it hasn't voted Tory was in 1995 when it split 2Lab/1Con.

Another result giving credence to the fact Greens can never organise themselves for by-elections!
