Don't be vague, Vote for Hague! That's nice but it's not quite "Hooley for Heeley" ( link) or even "Hardy for Hallam" ( link)

J.T. Murphy (1888 - 1965), Communist candidate, Sheffield Brightside by-election, 1930 ( link & link) That's quite an extravagant and full schedule of events (including paid tickets for entertainment events) for a parliamentary by-election campaign. These days it would hardly be matched even by the main parties in a high-profile by-election. It is slightly interesting that the former MP for Battersea North is referred to merely as "Saklatvala" rather than "S. Saklatvala" or "Mr. Saklatvala" or whatever. The said Mr Murphy got 1,084 votes (4.4%).

2022-1974 = 40 nowadays does it?
And why hit "back"? Brightside was already Labour then, they weren't hitting back at anybody, they were the incumbants.

Presumably he was referring to being elected as a councillor for the ward in May 1972. If he was not in fact elected for the ward abovementioned for the first time in the local elections in 1972, and therefore doesn’t validly have a 50th anniversary to celebrate, THEN he can validly and legitimately be denounced for hippopotamusesque deviationism.

Don't know how "40" got in there. I'm sure I sent my figures off towards "50".
I've been doing the annual accounts this evening, maybe I should go through them again.

I've been doing the annual accounts this evening, maybe I should go through them again. He was first elected for the ward in 1972, having stood unsuccessfully for Broomhill in 1971, so 50 years ago this year. I reckon the leaflet is also from 1972, as it's the only time that he and Michie were the only two candidates for the ward (there were all-out elections in 1973 for the new council which took over in 1974, and then elections by thirds).
