Oh bugger! I'm with Twaddleford on this. I think Labour will cling on some how?by getting more votes? Its a cunning plan, but it might just work. And, who knows? If it does the idea might become popular with the party's strategists.

Oh. My. God. Is this real? It is. Can you arrange a coachload to go canvassing at the weekend?

I wish to revise my earlier prediction that Labour will hang on. I now know that it is game over and that Trudy Harrison is about to be crowned Queen of Copeland. And how do I know this, you may ask? Well, it is simple really.....the dreaded WORDS have been spoken. The words that usually spell the realisation of impending electoral disaster. Words that Labour candidates always use when they know that the writing is on the wall. Before they use the words Labour candidates have to go to a very dark place. Today when the Labour candidate was asked for her message to the Copeland electorate, she said. "THERE ARE ONLY THREE DAYS LEFT TO SAVE THE NHS" And with those words we know that Labour's campaign is over I hope the Copeland electorate aren't gullible enough to believe this NHS twaddle.

I hope the Copeland electorate aren't gullible enough to believe this NHS twaddle. The whole electorate voted plurality Tory at the last election so there is president for voters believing twaddle about the NHS. Bloody republicans..

"Emotional appeal" reads irrational appeal to me.
Pretty dirty. I've seen worse though.

Well, I cannot confirm or infirm that cover, but at that exact time, the newspaper was leading a "SOS - Save Our Services" campaign that was quite blunt with words, so, it's possible they did that.

except when it isn't (see, for example, 1951, 2000, or 2016). You forgot February 1974 (though admittedly that is a borderline case). You could also add the Bristol SE by-election in 1961: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bristol_South_East_by-election,_1961 Anthony Wedgwood-Benn (as was) collected nearly 70% of the vote but his Conservative opponent was declared the winner!

We will see what happens on Thursday, but seems pretty unarguable that it is a pertinent local issue here, not just a boilerplate Labour NHS campaign?

It's a highly effective approach. No ut isn't. They have been saying it for 30 years and it is the boy who cried wolf. Nobody believes it any more When localised and made to sound plausible it can be very effective. I've been involved in campaigns around this for the Tories, and it worked very well. Geography is the key. Consolidation is no longer as mindlessly opposed as it was 20 years ago as the choice is seen as first class services in a new hospital further away or second class services closer to you. However in isolated areas "further away" could mean 45 minutes away, and so it's often the choice between close by or nowhere. I accept it's localised, but that doesn't mean it won't be highly effective.

Isn't threatening voters like that in violation of electoral laws?
Vote for us, or we close your hospital?

If it is then I hope the Tories are paying more attention than they usually do in selecting candidates in Liverpool and ex coal mining seats. I thought one of Labours strengths was superior organisation amoung local activists, how could you be so dopey stupid!! 😱 Isn't it quite possible that message was meant to go out last Thursday, but for some reason didn't and got released yesterday by mistake? Stranger things have happened.
