They like to flood by elections with leafletters, door knockers, MPs etc. I don't recall this much Conservative activity since Crewe. Ah.

If the last GE showed us anything, it is that elections are not won (or lost) on Twitter. However, I can confirm that Labour are fighting a vigorous and active campaign on the ground. What sort of response are you getting on the doorstep? Not too bad, I am informed. I agree with our local Tory poster upthread that it is likely to be close - both main parties have strong candidates.

I'm hoping to get over to one of the by-elections over the next three weeks (I've got a lot of direct mail to deliver round my patch first). If I do, it will probably be Stoke because it's closer to home. Normally my Twitter would be full of selfies of Labour people out canvassing, and saying they had had a great response on the #labourdoorstep. I'm not seeing that this time - make of that what you will. It means that you forgot to post any Christmas cards this year and now all your friends are cutting you dead on twitter.

Are you not out canvassing yourself - it's your constituency, isn't it? Lack of time and not being too well since Christmas. Hope to get something done soon.

Well, the activity on the doorsteps is to a significant extent about winning the people you mentioned back over.....
Our candidate is good, and widely liked. That undoubtedly helps.

Rule 1 of canvassing is that it is bot about winning people over unless they specifically ask you why they should vote for you.

Rule 1a of when an alternative party canvasses you is that you get awarded brownie points for how long you can keep the canvasser talking to you on the doorstep and not talking to anyone else.

Although this can be great fun. I remember such a conversation with a Conservative supporter when I was running for council. He thought he was clever containing me for 15 minutes in a discussion. But he was the last address of the evening on my canvass.......And it was a good discussion.....Most of us who are political enjoy a good argument if our opponents are civil and reasoned.

If you are the candidate I think spending time engaging positively with electors, even if they disagree with you, can often pay dividends.. People do talk to each other and if someone from another party says in the pub or at the school gate "he/she was ok actually, first politician who has ever called round" I don't like being phoned though and tend to ask telephone canvassers for their name, where they are calling from, who the agent in their election is, and whether the cost of the call is being included in expenses... Hopefully it puts them off for ever.....

My twitter feed has more Conservatives tweeting from here than Labour. And I am not a Conservative (plenty of retweeted stuff as well). Now we should always take social media as an echo chamber but is there a resonance on the ground? If the last GE showed us anything, it is that elections are not won (or lost) on Twitter. However, I can confirm that Labour are fighting a vigorous and active campaign on the ground. Glad to here that. We are all counting on the Copeland Labour party to perform a great service for the nation by saving Jeremy.

A one to one contact can be worth a dozen target letters but it does have to be the right person doing it, and there has to be a simple and powerful message that can be conveyed quickly. If a Party can get that message into enough heads in a community, it will spread of its own accord, and the leaflets, letters and Facebook adverts will reinforce it.. Time spent arguing with people who will never change their mind is a bit pointless all I do seem to waste quite a bit of time doing it on internet forums!

I always remember being canvassed by the Liberal Alliance PPC a month before the 1987 election. In those days I was a Labour activist and I was more than happy to engage him in extended conversation on psephological matters and went into detailed discussion about earlier by elections such as Sutton & Cheam etc.. He clearly identified me as a far from typical voter in terms of my knowledge of elections etc. I did not reveal my own political activities , and he proceeded to invite me to his home for a meal. Whilst that never materialised, I do recall the shock and disbelief on his face when I turned up at General Election count wearing a red rosette. At that point he clearly knew that he had been had!

This works better at local elections, and in small communities at that (not in our 18,000 voter wards in Birmingham). For larger units you can't talk to enough people and they don't communicate with each other enough.
Time spent arguing with people who will never agree with you is not in my view pointless (otherwise I'd never be posting on this site would I?). There is nothing better for clarifying your own thoughts, and identifying weaknesses or contradictions in your automatic reactions.
