Yes, I think Arthur's referring to Bootle ward within Copeland BC, which returned a Conservative unopposed in 2015. I've often thought it would be good if places with the same name twinned with each other, with visits from organisations in each to the other. A Bootle twinning would be particularly fun to watch. We had some of this train of thought in the Pitchfork bait constituencies thread. Stratford upon Avon with Stratford upon Westfield comes to my mind.

This is tongue-in-cheek, surely? Bootle is many miles away from Whitehaven, and somewhat different as well. Yes, I think Arthur's referring to Bootle ward within Copeland BC, which returned a Conservative unopposed in 2015. The Tories were unopposed in Bootle in 1895 and 1900. In 1918 the Conservative MP was opposed only by the candidate of the Seaman's Union (who had the tacit support of the Liberals and Labour). Labour didn't stand in its own right until 1923. In 1950 and 1951 there were "anti partition" candidates.

In 1950 and 1951 there were "anti partition" candidates. Candidate sponsored by the Anti-Partition of Ireland League of Great Britain - formed to protest at the Attlee government's Ireland Act 1949 which guaranteed the future of Stormont.

That depends what they mean by the Christmas period. Presumably they weren't actually door knocking on Christmas Day itself. I don't see any problem with canvassing on the 28/29/30 December though.

It's a bit of a Lib Dem tactic- the fellow hasn't even left office yet. Also, I'd not take kindly to a politico making me open my door and letting all the heat out.

On the other hand you can get very bored over Christmas and any break from Christmas TV is welcome.

Well, judging by Twitter it is definitely the Tories who are doing the Christmas campaigning in Copeland... Jason McCartney, Iain Stewart, David Nuttall and Wendy Morton with lots of happy junior Tories... there today, possibly.. see #copeland

Quite, I've campaigned quite a bit over the years on the middle days and either it's 'I'm sorry I've got family round' or 'Lovely to see you, how committed, how much time have you got'. Once in all that time have I had someone outraged that I knocked on their door at that time of year...

Not quite as bad as a brothel, which I accidentally canvassed whilst still a callow youth. I declined their invitation to go in to "discuss your manifesto".

I had one canvassing experience that still makes me groan in anguish when I think of it. The moral of the story, which I offer to supporters of all parties: always look properly at who you are addressing before you open your mouth. One dark evening I was doing the rounds in Forest Gate. I had pushed a doorbell and there was a short delay, though sounds from within indicated that somebody was around. As I waited, I was scribbling away at my notes and, when the door opened, didn't immediately look up, but was vaguely aware of a diminutive figure standing in front of me. I said in that sing-song voice one uses to children: "Hello! Is your daddy or mummy there?". Too late I lifted my gaze and saw that the person I addressed was a dwarf, a middle-aged woman. She was not amused.

I declined their invitation to go in to "discuss your manifesto". When I was doing Channel 5 retuning I stumbled on an undercover garment sweatshop in a normal mid-terrace house. When they realised I wasn't from Immigration they were very nice and made me a sandwich while I did their three or four TV+video setups.
