Heaven knows why this UDC was split in the 'Walker reforms'. Queensbury should have been transferred into Calderdale. A far stronger link than Bradford. A decent contestation level and keenly fought by Tories and Labour. www.dropbox.com/sh/44exp1bceyj3018/AABXFiI4PTCNP_1IWSyNsWSBa?dl=0As an aside the Labour candidate for Shelf West in the 70s was my Physics teacher. A traditional Labour man - strong supporter of comprehensive education, encouraged girls to study science, strict disciplinarian...and hated poofs. (His words). Tom Torney was a 'cunt' for expecting Alan's jazz band to play at an election party for nowt. He paid union rates or no performance! Ivy Craven (Con) was an 'interesting' character with her frequent calls for public whipping of miscreants. I'll stop there...

Wonderful, hullenedge. Thank you once again. Ambler Thorn a ward all on its own, how quaint! Queensbury is my former home, and still the home of my parents. Eleven hundred feet above sea level, it's cold up there. If it's going to snow anywhere in West Yorkshire, expect it to start there. I think most of the residents wish it had been placed within Calderdale and not Bradford. It's much closer to Halifax, after all. I once had the privilege of watching a performance by the famous Black Dyke Band almost for free, when attending an event marking Queensbury's sesquicentenary (150 years since it was renamed from Queenshead) - which was also attended by then MP Gerry Sutcliffe. Queensbury is of course still keenly contested to this day, now between three parties and Independents. Clayton and Queensbury ward (existing between 1973 and 1980) was always Tory held. Then Queensbury finally became a single ward all of its own. Between 1980 and 2003, it was usually a Tory ward which could be won by Labour in their better years (though not since 1998). Then Mr & Mrs Cromie began to intervene (firstly under the BNP label, then as Independents) and they have both dominated the scene ever since, almost without interruption. Now UKIP is also looking competitive. Aided by general election turnout, the Conservatives won the ward in 2015, then came fourth in May this year at the expense of the incumbent. Almost anything could happen.
