Could I ask when we have by-elections in multi member wards which operate on the third rule, could you indicate a) the last election when the councillor who has caused the by-election was elected and b) which party is defending the seat?

You could put that information in place of the probably inaccurate but at the very least totally uninformative platitudes uttered by some unnamed colleague about deceased councillors

As you say, no real point to them but they seem, well, respectful and nice break from the usual hostilities.

Those quotes are something of a trial, I wanted to see what works and what doesn't under my "watch"

There was a lovely eccentric priest in Derby who, when he celebrated the funeral of an particularly abusive man, started his homily by saying :"Let's be honest Eileen, lying in this coffin is the first decent thing he's done for you and the children in over 20 years." I met him in Perth one time, and he was genuinely surprised that I had heard the story; for him, it wasn't notable.

“Councillor Ellis was well-respected; a loyal, calm, patient and fair gentleman” Words that sound so much like "the Conservative Party Candidate", that I was expecting him to be TUSC or something. There are many people in TUSC to whom the descriptors of 'well-respected', 'loyal', 'calm', 'patient', 'fair' and 'gentleman' apply. Not 'councillor' though...

I love the local paper quotations about the departed councillors: "Quiet and dedicated" (Never spoke in meetings, hard to remember.)
"Independent-minded and outspoken" (A bugger for the whips, never read his papers and was slightly racist.) "Colourful and lively" (often drunk.)

If I reading well, a forum member is a former councillor for Hedge End Wiltern...
EDIT: Being close to Keith House must turn people towards Labour, another former LD councillor for that ward, Keith Day, is the Labour candidate for the town by-election.

I was described as 'flamboyant' in one press story some years ago. Which means 'raging poof'

Yes, I served 1 year as a cllr for Hedge End Wildern. It was the very worst year of my adult life. Quite frankly, I wouldn't spit on KH if he were on fire - he is a contemptible low-life, who wouldn't recognise democracy if it slapped him round the face.

I like the precision of this statement on his website: "ABOUT KEITH HOUSE Keith House was born in West End, but grew up in Hedge End from the age of 7" meetings.eastleigh.gov.uk/mgMiniSite.aspx?UID=197

Seeing that there was only one polling station, and about a thousand votes to count, I'd presume that if they were counting tonight we would have already heard about it.
