I understand if SNP retain the seat they gain control of the council thanks to last weeks gain... correct? I think so too. Given current numbers are: SNP 14, Inds 8, Tories 4, and 1 apiece for Labour & LDs, that's a definite yes.

As with last week, the excellent reports on the preferences and transfers are on the council website.
| | Stage 1 | Stage 2 | Stage 3 | Stage 4 | David Cheape | Independent | 1401 | 1420 | 1477 | 1637 | Mark McDonald | SNP | 1033 | 1043 | 1078 | 1117 | Beth Morrison | Lib Dem | 75 | |
|
| Derek Shaw | Conservative | 568 | 586 | 606 |
| Ray Strachan | Labour | 141 | 151 |
|
|
I also note that they have a 'preference profile report' for last week's by election, basically showing exactly what was on each ballot paper. That's quite interesting, and I'm sure will be prepared for this election too.

Under normal circumstances these results would most likely produce 2 Ind 1 SNP. It will be interesting to see what happens next year, as the ward has 3 Independent councillors now.

Change from 2012: Independent -6.9 Are there any known links between this independent and the existing two, or are they all just benefiting from anti-SNP voting? And did anyone demand more services for Golf Street and Barry Links?

It is worth noting that in both Angus by-elections the Labour vote has broken slightly more for the SNP than the Conservatives. The tactical unionist preferencing seeming not to be much of a factor.

Although in both cases, if I've read the transfer report sheet clearly, Labour went out before independents and broke more for them than anyone else.

True. Although in last weeks election we know (I've gone through the preferences, but not guaranteeing no mistakes) that the number of voters who first preferenced labour and then gave the SNP a higher preference than the Conservatives (at any preference level) was 34 compared with 24 who first preferenced Labour and gave the Conservatives a higher preference than the SNP.
Considering the number of Labour 1st preferences was 177, that's a very high proportion who didn't give a preference to either!

You can navigate that site and understand those sheets? I can't spot them.
