I take it the turnout increases in Dartford reflect the occupation of new developments in the ward?

Yes the electorate was 1016 in 2003 when it was first contested and 1888 by 2011. The majority of the growth occurred since 2007

I am surprised that the Lib Dems have not put up a candidate in Castle ward. Back in 2003, they came within 3 votes of winning their first seat on Dartford Borough Council. They still have not won a seat on Dartford Council.

Castle ward is in the parish of Stone and its name refers to Stone Castle. It comprises three streets of victorian terraced housing built for the cement workers and two owner-occupied housing estates built on the former cement works - the larger one was complete by 2003 and the smaller one was more or less complete by 2007.

The ward also includes Bluewater Shopping Centre, built on yet another former cement works.

Here is the background to the by-election in the Central ward of Thurmaston Parish Council in Charnwood Borough in Leicestershire.

Thurmaston Parish Council comprises 19 members elected from four wards – Central (5), East (7), North (3) and South (4).

The council strengths were:

I am probably a sad case. I have been interested in elections for decades. The advent of the internet has enabled me to access the election notices across the whole country - so I have downloaded virtually the entire set for the UK since 2005. In some cases, I request the documents directly from the election offices, whose staff are generally very helpful and supportive.
