Two new Commons select committees have been created to scrutinise the Brexit and International Trade departments. Secret ballots for the chairs will be held on Wednesday. All MPs can vote, but to be validly nominated an MP needs 15 supporting nominations from their own party (or from 10% of their own party, whichever is lower). The ballot is conducted using the AV system.
The International Trade chair has been allocated to the SNP, while Labour will be getting the Brexit chair. On the same day there will also be an election for the (Labour) chair of the Home Affairs committee EDIT: and also Conservative chairs of DCMS and Science & Technology committees (thanks DBIV)
Nominations for all three five close tomorrow. Confirmed nominees so far are Chuka Umunna (Home Affairs) and Angus MacNeil (International Trade). Hilary Benn and Kate Hoey have both indicated they will be standing for Brexit.

During the walk yesterday, Gavin Barwell MP had a phone call from Caroline Somebody, canvassing his vote for the Home Affairs Select Committee election. He said he would vote for Chuka, but put her as second preference. Thus I discovered that the Select Committee chairs are elected by all MPs and not just members of the committee. Gavin says it works better for finding people who are constructive and have cross-party support.

They agree on their candidate and none of their MPs dares to challenge.

No special knowledge, but I would expect Benn to comfortably win Brexit. Interesting to see Clive Lewis nominating Hoey. Suspect Hoey could pick up votes from Corbynites as a revenge on Benn. Shouldn't give Benn sleepless nights. Would the SNP back Hoey to increase chances of hard Brexit and so tension between England and Scotland? They will have people on the committee though, and Benn will give them more opportunities to grandstand.
