why don't the Tory voters just put up pro Tory ones instead of slagging off an opponent ? I agree with this, though labour and the lib dems are just as guilty of this in certain areas. One kind of leaflet I totally detest is the extremely skewed bar chart. I groan when I see my party doing this.

I groan when I see my party doing this. Do the Tories often bother with bar charts? It is very much a LibDem speciality, though I have to admit that when I was elected I did a 'LibDems can't win here - it's Labour or Cameron's Conservative' bar chart on a leaflet. At least mine was accurate - shortly afterward, the nominations were published and the LibDems didn't even have a candidate! We don't bother usually with bar charts but I have seen it occur. The skewed bar charts from other parties just make me laugh. I know it is good to have a visual representation and I can see why parties do it but skewed bar charts just give the impression that they think the electorate are completely stupid.

More explanation of the Rufford division situation in a BBC blog: www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-19642970Note the appearance of a Conservative poster above the anti-John Peck poster in the picture accompanying the story, and the fact that the disgruntled residents have taken it up with a senior Nottinghamshire County Council Conservative councillor. Also note that Newark and Sherwood is not Labour controlled. There is also more than a hint that the complaint did not come from the Labour campaign but from other residents of the estate. The instigator of the anti-John Peck posters is Gail Benison, who knows something about political campaigns as she stood for the parish council in 2011. She was defeated by the entire slate of Labour candidates, including the top polling candidate: John Peck. www.newark-sherwooddc.gov.uk/media/newarkandsherwood/imagesandfiles/democraticservices/elections/parishandtownelections2011/Edwinstowe.pdf

I suspect 'rubbish' is the term causing problems. Certainly I've previously seen notices on letterboxes asking not to receive any election literature 'apart from Labour and independent candidates'.
Does seem to be a massive over-reaction though.

Here is the background to the two by-elections in the Chadsmead ward of Lichfield City Council in Lichfield District. Lichfield City Council comprises 28 members elected from six wards – Boley Park (5), Chadsmead (3), Curborough (5), Leomansley (5), St. John’s (5) and Stowe (5). The council strengths were: Elections on 1 May 2003: Con 17, Lab 6, Lib Dem 5 Elections on 3 May 2007: Con 23, Lib Dem 4, Ind 1 Elections on 5 May 2011: Con 26, Lab 1, Lib Dem 1 The result in Chadsmead ward on 1 May 2003 was: Con 349/313, Lab 340/320/278 Elected: Con 1, Lab 2 The result in Chadsmead ward on 3 May 2007 was: Lib Dems 422/344/343, Con 368/366/345, Lab 181/173/168, Independent 55 Elected: Lib Dem 1, Con 2 The result in Chadsmead ward on 5 May 2011 was: Con 397/389/384, Lib Dems 344/222/205, Lab 309/278/277 Elected: Con 3 These by-elections are caused by the resignations of Mick Fryers Jnr (Con) and Mick Fryers Snr (Con) – allegedly before they were disqualified for non-attendance. Mick Fryers Snr remains a member for Chadsmead ward on Lichfield District Council. The candidates are 2 Lib Dem, 2 Con, 2 No Description and 2 Lab. The two candidates without description are Eileen Cope and John Maunder, who stood as UKIP candidates for the District Council in 2011 in Curborough and St. John’s wards respectively. UKIP did not field any candidates in 2011 for the City Council. Probably Labour's best area in the town/city of Lichfield itself. They ought to win despite coming third in 2007.

I see the Rufford division contains the Centre Parcs complex that I visited late last month. Been there a few times, mainly in the late 80s and 90s. It was quite nice then but they've gone overboard with building new houses and villas now so that it looks more like a housing estate than a forest.

Satisfyingly rubbish result for the Nottinghamshire Independents, as their webpage comes across as the most ridiculously self-satisfied thing I've seen in some time.

If that Canterbury result is correct, it is actually very decent for us

It's certainly something to stick in the folder when it's being cheekily targeted in 2015.
The Lib Dem result in Cornwall is actually pretty good, given how badly the same candidate did in 2009. The lack of an independent certainly helped, but it suggests a fairly high degree of residual party loyalty.

If that Canterbury result is correct, it is actually very decent for us From Council website. Labour did not contest seat in 2011 but polled 14½% in 2007. Ward contains a large part of the University of Kent campus.
