A Lib Dem gain would cause me a great deal of befuddlement, given the present overall political climate. If the Tories were as far behind at this point as they were in October 1990, for instance - as opposed to getting the kind of leads they were getting in the run up to the 1983 election - I would have been a great deal more worried about their prospects. This was until todays by election the Conservatives 32nd safest seat. I would expect a drop, but to lose it would be. Well it would be that sensational that scousers might buy a copy of the sun on Saturday to read all about it. There have been Lib/LD successes in the past that have gone against the polling grain. I agree that the Tories are probably running too high in the polls for them to lose (because there will always be enough people who don't think about local or current issues when voting) but it would hardly be a miracle if the LDs won. People can want a Con govt but vote for LDs in a by-election to "send a message".

Northern beer is the proper beer To be serious for a minute (sod all this political malarkey) I'd argue that the proper beer is the local beer, wherever you are. Now I think of it, I think "proper" originally meant "belonging to" so that is almost a tautology. And therefore correct.

I agree that the proper beer is the local beer, but only when Joseph Holt bitter (from the handpump not the smoothflow) is not available. On that note, Arthur Figgis will be delighted to know that the beer in Iceland is brilliant.

Decent-ish turnout, interesting to see whether it benefits the Tories or their opponents more.

I've wanted to visit ever since I saw the TV show Trapped at the beginning of the year.

Marble are excellent but sadly have cut the ginger bitter. That is bad news because it was the only ginger flavour bitter I ever liked....and I loved it. Always sold out quickly at beer fetsvials.
