Bugger, why didn't I know this was happening? Incidentally, the "Van" in LibVan is short for Vannin i.e. genitive form of Mannin, (e.g. Ellan Vannin, the Isle of Man.) It is not a satirical reference to the possibility of fitting all the LibDems in a van. Obviously. That would be Libbike. Actually, joking aside, these seem to me to be good results for LibVan. Generally speaking Manx politics never used to be party based, and the only organised parties were Manx Labour and Mec Vannin (nationalists). But I admit I don't know what the previous make-up was.

It was a rat that had been run over by a van. Is LibVan the only political party contesting the election? What happened to the Manx Labour Party?

Only quoting the locals I met. Probably comeovers You may be right but I don't think so. I encountered much unhappiness e.g. over the cost of transport to and from the island. The Isle of Man Packet is, of course, state owned but many of the locals, not comeovers, felt trapped as they could not afford the fares.

What happened to the Manx Labour Party? Was asking myself that. Fourth place in Douglas North; also standing in Douglas East and Castletown, Arbory and Malew according to their FB page, which also says they've continuously been in Tynwald since 1918. I'd guess Douglas East will be their best chance; Castletown etc is very rural.

I imagine all but the most stupid would know that using english equivalents would make more snese to you. The IoM is a small pool and there is a longstanding belief that a small clique of local big fishes runs it for their own benefit - I don't know of the belief is justified, but you can see how it might happen. And there is also the feeling that the financial sector may have its benefits for the island economy, but that thye do not necessarily trickle down and inflate house prices, fares etc. I note that a lot of the winners have Manx names.

Only quoting the locals I met. Probably comeovers In Gibraltar, they still call it the House of Assembly despite it actually being a parliament with MPs. Some of the members are very very proud of having MP after their name.

Only one Quayle this time? In the past it would have been a few.

So in summary, what were the changes/main talking points here? Incumbents did badly. Not only did seven stand down, five were defeated, so half of the MHKs will be new. Only two MHKs have served two full terms. So it was a 'change election'. Liberal Vannin got three members elected, but for the first time since 1919 there are no members of the Manx Labour Party. This is the Isle of Man so the change isn't really a matter of parties. No-one entirely knows how the new members will relate; things may be a bit clearer when the Chief Minister is elected (incumbent Allan Bell stood down so there's an open contest in which there are likely to be a lot of candidates). One of the biggest issues is a looming deficit in paying public service pensions, alongside all the traditional issues of the cost of living, public services etc.
