The Isle of Man holds its regularly scheduled general election on Thursday 22 September, keeping with the five-yearly cycle which has operated since the end of the Second World War. Since the previous election there have been major boundary changes and now the island is divided into twelve constituencies each electing two members to the House of Keys. The 24 members of the House of Keys gave it its name, Yn Kiare-as-Feed - which translates into English as 'The Four and Twenty", but believed to have been misheard and written down phonetically to give the usual English name). There is new electoral legislation to limit campaign spending, and also register the few political parties. Nominations open on Wednesday, for a week, but some candidates have already declared - Manx Radio has a list. (In the international elections board, where it does not technically belong as the Isle of Man is a Crown Dependency.)

First result is Douglas South Kathleen Joan BEECROFT (LibVan) 1,134 William Mackay MALARKEY 952Keith Daryl FITTON 767 David Anthony FOWLER 296 Those are local election numbers! I won my seat with twice that. I haven't checked the details, but a 24-seat assembly with single-member seats and a population of 85,000 gives about 2,000 letterboxes to get to. Could do that in a weekend in urban areas. Edit: I see it's 12 x 2-member seats, so 4,000 letterboxes. About the size of my patch in Sheffield.

When I was there a couple of years ago, the Sefton Hotal was the centre of controversy. It was in financial trouble, despite the statue of Norman Wisdom outside. It was bailed out by the Parliament. Locals who spoke to me were outraged by this as they claimed that many MP's had shares in the Hotel. I have not checked whether their claims were true. It would be interesting to know if these concerns, justified or not, are reflected in the results.

Bugger, why didn't I know this was happening?
Incidentally, the "Van" in LibVan is short for Vannin i.e. genitive form of Mannin, (e.g. Ellan Vannin, the Isle of Man.) It is not a satirical reference to the possibility of fitting all the LibDems in a van.
