The Tory vote for October 1974 minus the 1971 census Professional/Managerial %. (Kinnear did this for the 1970 GE in The British Voter). The average score (Vote - Census Stat) is 23.7% with a standard deviation of 9%. Over 32.7% (Blue) 74 seats and 70 Con wins. (Portsmouth North, Plymouth Devonport, Nelson & Colne, Ipswich won by Lab). 23.7-32.7% (Light blue) 290 seats and 191 Con wins. 14.7-23.7 (uncoloured) 148 seats and 16 Con wins. 0-14.7 (Light red) 105 seats. Negative scores (Red) 6 seats, four in Rural Wales. The 16 seats where the Tories 'underperformed' are:- HERTFORDSHIRE SOUTH WEST HAMPSTEAD ST. ALBANS EDINBURGH NORTH DENBIGH KINROSS and WEST PERTHSHIRE RICHMOND HAZEL GROVE ABERDEENSHIRE WEST ABERDEEN SOUTH EDINBURGH, PENTLANDS HENDON SOUTH EDINBURGH SOUTH GLASGOW, HILLHEAD EDINBURGH WEST RENFREWSHIRE EAST.

The top 100 'no car household' constituencies at GE19 - Labour (red)- 79, Others (light red) -21 (Con 5, SNP 15, Green 1). The bottom 100 'no car household' - Con (blue) - 98; Gordon and Carmarthen East being the other seats.

South Pennines, 1983 locals:- Within a month we'd swept through every ward in the Calder Valley, moved ahead in Sowerby Bridge and (probably) Town. Richard Wainwright led in the Holme Valley wards. The four Spen Valley wards swung behind Elizabeth Peacock. Denby Dale went Blue. There was a swing to Labour in Bradford West (Toller?). And Ben Ford split the Labour vote in Bradford North to hand the Tories a surprise gain.
