I take note of what middleenglander says but although it is the only way to do so it is not particularly accurate to compare the vote shares in East Brighton as the Lib Dems only had 1 candidate in 2015 and that will give a higher % than if they had fielded a full slate . The 2 Notts contests are more interesting as the Independents in Bingham aka Bingham First are almost all former Lib Dems ( indeed some of them still are ) led by Rushcliffe District Councillor George Davidson elected originally in 2003 as a Lib Dem but re elected in 2015 as an Independent. George Davidson was also the Lib Dem candidate for Bingham in 2005/20092013 .It is no surprise that the Lib Dems did not compete against them in the by election . In that case it is a bit disappointing that (a) they didn't stand as LDs (b) that the local party presumably did not actively campaign for or endorse them, and (c) they didn't win, as, given the margin, they might have done under a LD name, in a ward where it seems we used to get 30% of the vote. Unless (d) we are so toxic as a brand that it is best not to officially be a LD, which would be most disappointing of all.

A bit difficult for them to stand as Lib Dems for now as they run Bingham TC as Bingham First with 11 out of the 14 councillors elected in 2015 ( the other 3 Conservative ) . Being realistic they stood more chance of winning as an Independent than if they had stood as a Lib Dem . There is no doubt that the Independent won in the Bingham part of the CC division but the 2/3rds of the Cranmer DC ward which is in the CC division put the Conservatives over the line . George Davidson was elected to the BC as a Lib Dem 2003-2011 and 2015 as an Ind . Susan Hull to the BC in 2015 as an Ind although unsuccessful previously as a Lib Dem .

In Ashfield it's a bit more complicated because the Ashfield Lib Dems were based around Jason Zadrozny, which presents a bit of a problem at the moment.
