Hong Kong Legislative Elections next month, on 4th September. Elections are held every four years.
Elections are from 70 multi-member constituencies, 35 geographical members from five geographic constituencies and 35 functional members from functional constituencies. All electors have two votes, one for a geographic representative, one for a functional representative. Those electors who are not in a functional constituency are in the 'District Council' functional constituency.
There are 19 "parties" represented in LegCo, but many are single-member semi-independents. Most members can be grouped into pro-Beijing and pro-Democracy.
Current LegCo:
Pro-Beijing: DAB 13, BPA 7, FTU 6, Liberal 5, NPP 2 , others 10 = 43
Pro-Democracy: Civic 6, Democrat 6, Labour 4, PP/LSD 3, others 8 = 27
Of the nine "parties", six are lead by women. Hold your breath, these are the full names of the parties:
DAB: Democratic Alliance for the Betterment and Progress of Hong Kong
PBA: Business and Professionals Alliance
FTU: Hong Kong Federation of Trade Unions
Lib: Liberal Party
NPP: New People's Party
Civic: Civic Party
Dem: Democratic Party
Labour: Labour Party
PP/LSD: People Power/League of Social Democrats
As is typical in Hong Kong:
the Democratic Alliance distrust democracy
the Trade Union Federation are pro-communists
the Liberal Party are conservatives
the New Party want to use the democratic system to put the people in power
the Civic Party are a bunch of lawers who beleive in rule of law
the Democratic Party were the core movers in getting democracy for Hong Kong, and, mission over, have tumbled down the polls
the Labour Party are a Blairist social democratic party
People Power and the League of Extrordinary... sorry, League of Social Democrats are, well, imagine the SDP split with David Owen taking a group of supporters into a new party, but then SDP and The Owen Party formed an electoral allance....
