Here is some background to this week’s by-election for St. Peter’s ward of Petersfield Town Council in East Hampshire.
Petersfield Town Council comprises 12 members, 2 each elected from 6 wards, Bell Hill, Causeway, Heath, Rother, St. Mary’s and St. Peter’s.
The Council strengths were: 3 May 2007: Con 6, Lib Dem 2, Ind 2, Vacant 2 (filled by co-option) 5 May 2011: Con 5, Lib Dem 4, Lab 1, Vacant 2 (filled by co-option).
The results in St. Peter’s ward were: 3 May 2007: 2 Con unopposed 5 May 2011: No candidates nominated.
On 4 July 2011, the Town Council filled the two vacancies in St. Peter’s ward by co-opting Samantha Farrow (Ind) and Bill Organ (Lab).
On 9 January 2012, the Town Council reported the resignation of Bob Ayer (Con) in Rother ward, although he remains a District Councillor for Petersfield Rother. On 6 February 2012, the Town Council filled the vacancy by co-opting Ben Errey (Ind).
The present by-election is caused by the resignation of the co-opted member, Samantha Farrow (Ind).
The Town Council is presently Con 4, Lib Dem 4, Lab 2, Ind 1, Vacant 1.
Neither Con nor Lib Dem has nominated a candidate for the by-election; the choice is UKIP, Independent, No Description and Lab.

The last two vacancies on Petersfield Town Council were filled by co-option. Alan Tarver applied on both occasions, but was not selected by the Council.
This time someone called a by-election and Alan Tarver was elected.
