Here is the background to the forthcoming by-election in the Altofts ward of Normanton Town Council in Wakefield on 16 August.
Normanton Town Council comprises 22 members, elected from 4 wards – Altofts (7 members), Normanton (7 members), Normanton Common (2 members) and Woodhouse (6 wards).
The council strengths were: Elections on 3 May 2007: Lab 20, Lib Dem 1, Ind 1 Elections on 5 May 2011: Lab 16, Lib Dem 1, Vacant 5
In 2007 only Altofts ward was contested, with 15 members in the remaining 3 wards returned unopposed. In 2011, no wards were contested, with the 17 nominated candidates returned unopposed and a shortfall of 5 candidates – leaving the remaining vacancies to be filled by co-option.
The result in Altofts ward on 3 May 2007 was: Lib Dem 751, Lab 693/684/655/630/609/598/460 Elected: Lib Dem 1, Lab 6
The result in Altofts ward on 5 May 2011 was: Lab 4, Lib Dem 1 – unopposed – shortfall of 2 candidates
The by-election on 16 August was caused by the death of Mike Burch (Lib Dem).

Edit: Just for background, Bryan stood in the Normanton ward at district council level in 2011 and 2012, securing 17% and 25% in those two years, respectively.

One minor result tonight Thatcham TC ( West Berks ) LD 863 Con 577 LD hold 2011 result 4 LD 2 Con elected top votes LD 1066 Con 1137 bottom votes LD 812 Con 888 6 candidates each party Well done to Shaun and the team up there! The long road back in that part of the world has finally started.

The Conservatives won Stotfold and Langford, with a majority of 575. The Labour percentage vote is said to have risen by 10%.

Labour won Altofts, with 467 votes to UKIP's 216. Former Normanton Mayor Audrey Wood is now back on Normanton TC.
Looking for positives in defeat, at 31.6% that's the highest % UKIP has ever managed in an election within Wakefield district, and in the ward of Wakefield Council Leader Peter Box no less.

The council strengths were: Elections on 3 May 2007: Lib Dem 11, Con 7 After Thatcham North by-election on 12 January 2008: Lib Dem 12, Con 6 Elections on 5 May 2011: Lib Dem 13, Con 5
I do not have the detailed results for 3 May 2007.
The result of the by-election in Thatcham South and Crookham on 20 March 2009 was: Lib Dem 1053, Con 680 Lib Dem hold (Mrs Marvellous Ford elected)
The result in Thatcham South and Crookham ward on 5 May 2011 was: Con 1137/1118/994/949/902/888, Lib Dem 1066/1064/1018/1005/951/812 Elected: Con 2, Lib Dem 4 The result was not declared until Monday, 9 May 2011, after a recount. A first recount on Friday had been abandoned.
The by-election on 16 August 2012 was caused by the resignation of Mrs Marvellous Ford (Lib Dem) due to personal reasons, reported on 9 July 2012.
