I presume that's a typo on the last page and it's not really listing the election results of 1796.

After Ryedale District Council was established in 1973, it wasn't until 1983 that anyone other than independents stood in Pickering ward (it was the Liberal/SDP Alliance). Some of the candidates' names appearing on the documents hullenedge uncovered appear here as well:

Wouldn't it be nice if all Independents could identify themselves as Right, Left, Centre etc, if they have to stand at all - as they seem to do in France, for instance (as in Divers gauche and Divers droite). It would make the work of the psephologist much easier and more interesting.
