He made clear he is still a Labour member, and tried to resign Scottish Labour (because they think they are totally clueless on what to do right now) without leaving UK Labour, but it wasn't possible. Can found the relevent blog post if needed (below part of that blog post forargyll.com/?p=103922). Anyways, he didn't ran against an official Labour candidate, so, no sanctions are possible (and the only Labour candidate in Oban since years was himself).

As has been previously indicated my national party affiliation is Labour (and I am a paid up member). However I have stood as an Independent at the local level in recognition of the fact people want someone to stand up for the local area. Obviously if at some stage in the future a Labour candidate and I were to stand against each other in the same election this would result in my membership being terminated.

Who wrote the ridiculous guidance?

It's often the way in the Highlands - Peter Peacock always stood as an Independent locally but then became a Labour MP. I think this is recognised so often the parties don't stand a formal candidate but it's known who is who in terms of national affiluation

Tories seem to have "issues" in Suffolk at present - next year's CC elections could well be worth keeping an eye on there.

No surprise I suspect that the Conservatives are taking a hammering at the moment in local by-elections. More interesting will be whether they are still taking a hammering in September

Mid Suffolk Green gain from Con Green 212 Con 210 LD 154 Lab 38 That makes Mid Suffolk council Conservative 29, Green 6, Lib Dem 4. The Mid Suffolk Greens are well organised and are making good progress. As the Bishop says, Suffolk's county elections next year could be interesting, given how badly run that council has been.

Hard to look at these results and think that the two party system is about to revive.
