Further to my thread about historical Scottish local election results as reported in the Herald (formerly the Glasgow Herald), I have created a shareable Google spreadsheet with links to all the relevant articles I have traced concerning local elections - not just in Scotland but in England and Wales as well. These pages are free to view on Google Newspaper Archives, which has articles of the Herald stretching from 1806 to 1990. My spreadsheet aims to facilitate searching. The most recent local elections I have linked are the 1989 county council elections. I have worked all the way back to 1889 so far. As we know, local election results always take more than a day to be announced, which is why there are links to multiple articles for the same elections in many cases. I have given details of the dates of the relevant editions, and the pages you might want to scroll towards to see the articles themselves. For the earlier editions, which are much harder on the eyes, the column is given as well. You might notice some gaps in coverage - this could be for a number of reasons - perhaps because the editions for some dates are not available, or the event just wasn't covered at all, or I will have missed it. I welcome any comments. Scottish results are given at ward level, and those for England and Wales vary considerably in detail from one year to the next. Anyway, I hope you find it useful and interesting. Here goes: Index to historical UK local election results articles from the Glasgow Herald

I hope the links are working for anyone interested.
I'd like to fill in any gaps where possible. Perhaps some of you could even give me some guidance. The difficulty seems to lie with election dates, the further back one goes. Things are complicated by the fact that some batches of elections - in particular the county council ones - were spread over several days and seem to vary from one year to the next. The triennial LCC elections always got a mention but they weren't always held at the same time as the other county councils, as far as I can ascertain. Also, there seems to be little in the way of UDC and RDC results. This could just be because they were seen as relatively insignificant by this Scottish based newspaper, rather than me not being able to find anything about them.

I am now gradually adding more links to articles relating to English and Welsh county council elections to my spreadsheet, where I can find them.
Rather unhelpfully for research purposes - as mentioned upthread - these triennial elections used to be staggered over a seven day period in 1970 and earlier: what day you voted depended on which county you were in. For 1970, 1967, 1964 and 1961 these appeared to be between a Monday to Saturday in April - the same week as the GLC elections (or LCC elections depending how far back you go). Going back to 1958, they appear to have been held between one Thursday to the following Thursday.
I'm left wondering not only why things were so complicated, but also to what extent voters in the later part of the week will have been influenced by the results from the earlier part of the week.

Many thanks, Swanarcadian, for the links.
A fascinating headline on 2 May 1980 - "SNP wiped out". Who could have predicted then?

A huge thank you to Alan Willis who has transcribed a great deal of Scottish local election results from the Glasgow Herald onto a shareable spreadsheet. Alan has kindly allowed me to make it available to view online and it's on my Old UK Councils forum. There are complete results available for the period between 1945 and 1973 in the following councils: Cowdenbeath Falkirk Gourock Grangemouth Lerwick Motherwell and Wishaw Perth Stirling Whitburn plus much more. There may be a few errors due to the varying quality of the online scans, and some of the gaps in the data have been plugged by using other Scottish newspapers. Any help that can be offered to plug even more of the gaps would of course be greatly appreciated. oldukcouncils.freeforums.net/post/2747

Perhaps I ought to have created a new thread, or there are too many other exciting things going on at the moment.

Have seen what you are doing, and glad its being done, as somebody certainly needs to do it. Have been over to the site and had a good look at what is being assembled there but only in guest mode. Don't have anything to contribute at the moment so haven't bothered to join as a member. Would love to pursue some lines of enquiry from the postwar era up to 1973 but doubt whether the time is going to be there to do it. But good luck.

Like YellowPeril I've been over to have a look, but not actually registered, since I don't have anything to contribute at the moment. I don't have access to any old results that aren't already online, and I don't have any other contributions I can currently commit to. However, I am definitely impressed enough that I'm planning to nominate you for VoteUK Technical Contributor this year.

I appreciate the above comments and the fact that it takes time - and indeed some money - to contribute anything towards this long term project.
