A by election won by Hugh Childers, whose son Erskine wrote "The Riddle of the Sands", and whose grandson Erskine Hamilton was the fourth President of Ireland. And who (Erskine that is) was executed by the Free State forces in 1922.

James Callaghan’s first name was Leonard. And three of the other five Labour PMs had James as their first name.

From reading Philip Larkin’s poems, I have come across an MP about whom he wrote a poem: Tom Teevan (1927-1954) was was UUP MP for Belfast West from a by-election in November 1950 to the general election of 1951. He was elected aged 23 by a majority of 913, defeated aged 24 by a majority of 25, and died of pneumonia aged 27. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thomas_Teevan_(Unionist_politician)The book doesn’t explain why Larkin wrote a poem about him, although he obviously had a low opinion of him.

Ever since Liz Truss became Prime Minister, I have been conscious of the fact that, for the first time in my life, I am older than the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom.
But it has just occurred to me that, until two days ago, I was older than all 4 holders of the so-called Great Offices of State. Or even all 5 if you include the Deputy PM, Therese Coffey (bizarrely, even she wasn’t born until I was 3).

Assuming a 'new' Prime Minister, we'll soon have 7 living former Prime Ministers.

There have only been 3 occasions on which 3 consecutive prime ministers were born in 3 consecutive decades:
1835: Melbourne, born 1779 1841: Peel, 1788 1846: Russell, 1792
1937: Chamberlain, 1869 1940: Churchill, 1874 1945: Attlee, 1883
2016: May, 1956 2019: Johnson, 1964 2022: Truss, 1975
If Rishi Sunak (born 1980) is the next prime minister, it will be the first time ever that 4 consecutive UK prime ministers have been born in 4 consecutive decades.

Liz Truss will set the record for the shortest-serving UK prime minister, but also the shortest period of overlap between
(a) a new prime minister at the end of the reign of a monarch (2 days) and (b) an outgoing prime minister at the start of the reign of a new monarch (6 weeks).
The previous records for those were Stanley Baldwin at the end of the reign of King George V (7 months) and Stanley Baldwin at the start of the reign of George VI (5 months).

Liz Truss was Prime Minister for 52 seconds for each of the 81,326 people who voted for her in the leadership election.
Boris Johnson was Prime Minister for 7 seconds for every person who voted Conservative in the 2019 general election.

Grant Shapps has just set a new record for shortest serving Home Secretary at 6 days. Suella Braverman of course was the previous record holder.
