I have now taken my MPs list back to 1910. They number 5587. Those highlighted in yellow won by-elections, those in bold italics left before dissolution.
I have also been slowly adding other biographical data. The columns are as follows (there is much still to input):
1. First Name (or names - I am trying to determine by which, if any, of the first names they were generally known by).
2. Surname (sometimes it is extremely difficult to work out whether middle names are part of an un-hypenated surname, such as Iain Duncan Smith, or not, as in Andrew Bonar Law)
3. Party (lots still to fill in, but this will show party of first election)
4. Gender
5. Full Name (I am trying to lift these from the Parliamentary Oaths lists where possible)
6. Peerage Title (lots of MPs end up in the House of Lords, this is how they were known in the Other Place)
7. Date of Peerage (the date they received their peerage)
8. Took Lords Oath (the day they entered HOL, taken from Hansard if possible)
9. Maiden Speech HOL (date and time of their first speech in HOL)
10. Date became PM
11. Date Became Chancellor
12. Date became Home Secretary
13. Date became Foreign Secretary
14. Speaker - Date Became Speaker of HOC
15. Date became PC - I have all the dates of the current PC appts and it is just a matter of inputting these
16. Bt - Date Became a Baronet - less common these days
17-23. KG KT KCB KCMG KCVO KBE Kt Bach
. I wanted to add dates of knighthoods, only to discover there are many different types, and you can get more than one whatsmore. I will try to find whatever I can.
24. OM - Date of Award of the Order of Merit
25. CH - Date of Award of Companion of Honour
26. Date of Birth
27. DOD - Date of Death
28. Age - either current age or age at death
29. number - number of parliaments sat in
30. Took Oath - date the MP took the Parliamentary Oath for the first time
31. Maiden Speech - date and time MP spoke for first time in House of Commons
32. First Elected - Date of First Election - for sake of consistency I have chosen the date of the election, not the declaration dates
33. Last Date - Last Date sat. For consistency I have chosen the date of the next election as the date that retiring MPs left
34. Reason left (for last time) - death, resignation, peerages, etc.
35. Age at first election (for those whose exact DOB are known).
I am aware there is lots still to do. I am also looking for ideas for other information, such as Public Schools, Oxbridge Colleges/other Universities. Some MPs played first class cricket, especially in the pre-war days. I have found 2 that played football in the English Football league, Sir Hubert Ashton (for West Brom, Clapton Orient and Bristol Rovers) and Jack Slater (Bolton W). Some may have played in the Scottish Football League but I haven't traced any yet. As sports were ingrained in public schools in the Victorian era I suspect some took part in early olympic games and others were rugby internationals.
Military honours and ranks would also be a useful addition. At least one MP won the VC.
