Atherton is Bolton. Wiganners wouldn't give a pastry lid for it to be part of a constituency in the Wigan MB area. Splitting a ward in Wigan is simply not required.

Atherton is in Wigan MB, not in Bolton MB. (As far as I'm aware, the town's always been associated with Leigh, and never with Bolton.) Atherton ward doesn't include all of Atherton town. Wigan MB has an electorate of 3.05 quotas. Taking an orphan ward out of Wigan is simply not required.

We can all create viable seats in Wigan excluding Atherton so I don't see why it should be added to a Leigh constituency, particularly if it might require splitting wards.

As you know, I think this perspective is backwards. Why people should respect wards rather than boroughs and towns is beyond me.

I've only just got round to having a proper look at the boundaries in this region and I think overall they're not at all bad. I'd go for a different plan in Cumbria (this has been well=rehearsed) but most of Lancashire, Cheshire and Merseyside looks OK to me. Most of Greater Manchester too, but there are some oddities in the East so I would propose some changes there. As ever these are probably not original observations. The oddest one for me is Oldham. I really can't see why they've declined to take the opportunity to put the whole town in one seat, despite having a single seat called Oldham, half the town is in Droylesden and Failsworth. It seems a simple and obvious change to swap the Chadderton wards and Moston for the four Oldham wards which lie south of the town centre. I would also pur Saddleworth West & Lees in Littleborough & Saddleworth and Royton North in Oldham No changes proposed to Rochdale, Ashton, Marple & Hyde and Stockport North & Denton but the other three seats in the Stockport/Macclesfield can be reconfigured in a prettier way. The Poynton/Disley area can go back in with Macclesfield in exchange for the Wilmslow/Alderley area which links nicely with Cheadle with Stockport South then linking with the remaining wards from their rather weird Branhall & Poynton. This does split Bramhall but that doesn't seem to be too big a deal to me and better than splitting Wilmslow in the way they have Droylesden & Failsworth 76338 Oldham 75894 Littleborough & Saddleworth 75713 Stockport South 71213 Cheadle & Wilmslow 77679 MAcclesfield 72751

Also perhaps Radcliffe East to [Radcliffe &] Farnworth, Pilkington Park to Middleton & Prestwich, Unsworth to Bury
And Bolton NE should be renamed Bolton East

That avoids the three-borough seat in the east. You can also avoid crossing the Trafford/Cheshire boundary. Then you can reinstate both Stalybridge & Hyde and Hazel Grove. Agree with you about Littleborough & Saddleworth. Manchester Central 74874 Manchester Gorton 75984 Stretford & Whalley 71612 Altrincham & Sale W 76239 Macclesfield 76678 Cheadle & Heatons 71861 Winslow & Bramhall 75992 Hazel Grove 74182 Stockport & Denton 73138 Stalybridge & Hyde 78223 Ashton & Failsworth 78464 Oldham 78071

I have come to the conclusion that putting at least part of Cheshire in with Greater Manchester is inevitable, but the awkward connections of Cheshire constituencies can be solved by treating Widnes and Warrington as separate from Runcorn and the area around Lymm, as was the case before 1983:

I presume you chose that particular plan in the end due to it splitting my home village into three constituencies...

My gut feeling about the revised recommendations.
Cumbria, no change Lancashire, likely to see a "Valleys of Ribble and Lune" and refitted Pendle but everything else as is Gtr Manchester, minimal change West and central, everything East of Manchester itself likely to be redrawn Merseyside, largely unchanged except the Wirral Cheshire, changed around the West and Wirral but largely untouched

Sorting out the BIB is especially important. I already disagree with my own plan for Lancashire, but I disagree just as much with that of the Commission, so I would like to see different changes there. You are the expert and have much more of a stake in that county's boundaries, though, so I shan't press home the point too much there either.

And on Manchester, remember its boundaries are extremely tightly drawn and look quite odd. Though I suspect Didsbury is lost to the Tories for a long time. The natural Tory voters' kids are moving or have moved out towards the Heatons, Cheadle or Sale. That movement, which mirrors past ones, is what keeps the Conservative Party vibrant in Trafford and competitive in Stockport despite it all. That's my excuse for ending up with Bradford, Burnage and Chorlton as orphan wards. You can stop all those three places going Tory at general elections by putting them in with Denton & Reddish, Stockport and Wythenshawe respectively. Didsbury can be part of the last of those seats too.

Cheadle is not moving much towards the conservatives at all, despite us taking the parliamentary seat. Stepping Hill was the exception, Cheadle Hulme is not really competitive for the conservatives at present and Bramhall maintains a large lib dem vote, despite them not having had any councillors in the ward for a while. Hazel Grove is showing more swing away from the lib dems and towards the conservatives than Cheadle is. I think Bramhall should go in with Poynton and Hazel Grove ought to be paired with Disley, so that both seats end up as safe Conservative ones except on a very bad day for the blue team... ... just to prove that my plans for that part of the region were not intended as an anti-Tory gerrymander, which is the impression my previous post could have given.

"B2.10 North Lancashire We strongly support this seat and proposed a very similar seat (Valleys of Ribble and Lune) at the last, uncompleted, boundary review."
Little nod to the unofficial constituency of VoteUK from the NW LibDems
