I still think a Tyne Bridge seat is reasonable, so I'm still in favour of my initial efforts with a couple of modifications (least change in Middlesborough; putting Prudhoe into Blaydon and using that to neaten up Tyne Bridge.) But if you are dead set against it, here's a plausible option for Northumberland and Tyneside which I think works reasonably well: Berwick and Morpeth (73286) - Berwick gains Pegswood, Bellingham and Morpeth Ashington & Blyth (73869) - the rest of Wansbeck, plus Blyth town and Hartley Tynemouth (74618) - unchanged North Tyneside (76427) - unchanged Newcastle East (72409) - gains Gosforth Newcastle West (77078) - successor to Central, loses West Gosforth and gains the old Newburn UD Cramlington & Newcastle North (73901) - Holywell, Seghill with Seaton Delaval, Cramlington, Ponteland and the Newcastle wards of Castle, Woolsington, Fawdon and Parklands Blaydon & Hexham (72591) - the rest of Hexham and the five westernmost wards of Gateshead Gateshead (75965) - loses Felling, High Fell and Windy Nook & Whitehills, gains Birtley, Lamesley and Whickham Jarrow & Gateshead East (74770) - loses the two Boldon wards, gains Simonside & Rekendyke from South Shields and Felling, High Fell and Windy Nook & Whitehills from Gateshead South Shields (71143) - gains the Boldon wards, loses Simonside & Rekendyke The Gateshead and South Tyneside portion appears to have been proposed in identical form by longmonty. The major problem there is putting Simonside & Rekendyke into the Jarrow seat, but the Simonside area at least appears to have close links to the Bede Estate. You can fix this, but only at the cost of splitting Whickham, which isn't any better. The innovative bit is what I've done with Cramlington. Whilst several plans have linked it with North Tyneside, I think this is much worse than Tyne Bridge, because you aren't just crossing a local authority boundary, you're also creating a lot of unnecessary change (I don't accept that the Tyne is a particularly impermeable physical or social barrier in the city centre.) On the other hand, putting Cramlington directly with Newcastle makes a lot of sense. There are good links down the A1 (which does go through North Tyneside, but if you're driving you're not likely to notice this) and it's clearly commuter suburbia. The case for putting Ponteland with northern Newcastle is even more obvious. What's more, this permits a nice split of Newcastle straight through the city centre, and being able to keep the cohesive block of four wards in the south-west together is a nice bonus.

Yes, it only makes sense if a) you're trying to gerrymander and b) you are assuming that the Commission will be too busy sniffing glue to notice. Even then, the numbers don't really work. Hexham and Cramlington is ugly and poorly connected, but Berwick and Hexham would be worse by an order of magnitude. (All of this assuming the Prudhoe transfer - I didn't bother drawing anything without it.) The main issue with the Tory gerrymander is of course the random chop of Choppington. Probably inspired by the place name or something. Realistically speaking, Blyth and Ashington without Cramlington has an electorate of 81.5k that oughtn't to be removed from. Chopping Choppington in half is what the zombie commissioners did, you can at least use both wards now. Or else use West Bedlington instead for a slightly cleaner look and respected parish boundaries (bottom left right) - though in fact you're back to running the boundary through builtup residential territory. If you want to do the Labour gerrymander instead, move Pontisland into Blyth Valley and all of the old Castle Morpeth seat plus Amble into Wansbeck (bottom right left). Unapologetic gerrymanders, they both are. If you want to try to avoid either, let me suggest the thing at top left. One Labour pack, one Tory pack, nobody's happy. Someone else do the math on who'd actually win Ashington & Berwick (though the math would be misleading, actually, because Alan Beith). You can even have your Hexham & Berwick cake and eat it too (top right), though I don't see whose preferred option that would be.

I have submitted a very similar scheme, but with different arrangement in Newcastle. Parklands should be put with Gosforth, for example. I am not supporting this scheme, as a restored Tyne Bridge is preferable in my view. The case for it gets stronger all the time. I merely said that a Newcastle/Cramlington/Ponteland constituency would be preferable to the Lib-Dems' proposals (and to Oskar Avery's). Also, it is possible to solve the "Rekendyke" problem without splitting Whickham. I shuffled the Gateshead wards around and came up with a solution, while putting Simonside & Rekendyke back into South Shields. PS Haltwhistle left out of map.

Tyne Bridge is just horrible. Sorry. If you must cross the Tyne do so way off to the west.
Blaydon and Hexham is pretty horrid too.

My Gateshead & South Tyneside constituencies to solve the Rekendyke problem would be: Gateshead Central & South (Birtley, Chowdene, Dunston & Teams, Dunston Hill & Whickham East, High Fell, Lamesley, Lobley Hill & Bensham, Low Fell, Whickham North, Whickham South & Sunniside, Windy Nook & Whitehills) 71,768; Jarrow & Gateshead East (Bridges, Felling, Deckham, Pelaw & Heworth, Saltwell, Wardley & Leam Lane, Bede, Fellgate & Hedworth, Hebburn North, Hebburn South, Monkton, Primrose) 72,643. This all depends on a Hexham & Blaydon constituency and a Newcastle/Ponteland/Cramlington constituency, which would horrify the Ponteland Tories etc.

I know I'm in a minority here, but I never found the old Tyne Bridge seat that objectionable. I don't know if you're in that small a minority (it doesn't appear so from comments on here). My own view is that I disliked that seat at the time but now it seems like the least bad option and the fact it has existed previously and therefore set a precedent is one of the reasons I feel that way. Similar to the Poplar & Canning Town seat which I strongly resented at the time it was first created, primarily for breaching the old LCC boundary, but now is my much preferred option for the necessary Lea crossing

Just a quick question. Does anybody know if it is possible to replace the word Middlesborough with Middlesbrough whenever it is typed?
Even as I grow older and calmer there is still something within me that causes a red mist to descend whenever I see my home town described as Middlesborough.
Although the football team is known as the Boro most of the people I know pronounce the town Middlesbro.

I've spent the last few days up in the North East, which prompted me to come up with the following set of boundaries:
Minimal crossing of local authorities. A three-seat Northumberland. Darlington on its own. No Seat containing wards from more than two LAs. No single orphan wards (Not even sure there are any orphaned pairs). The Tyne crossing is upstream with plenty of bridges. What's not to like?

Apart from 'Stockton Central' crossing the Tees, and Middlesbrough being misspelt... the way you've formatted the post by copying and pasting exported data from Boundary Assistant, quite frankly. There isn't a style guide as such, but I think most would agree that it isn't the most helpful way to present your proposals. Since that's only your 35th post on the forum I suppose it's not a big deal. However, as a piece of friendly advice I suggest you try at least one of the following instead: take a screengrab of the map and post the image here; put the data into a Google Docs spreadsheet and then link to that here; and use posts upthread by the likes of greenhert, islington and La Fontaine as a template.

Similar to the Poplar & Canning Town seat which I strongly resented at the time it was first created, primarily for breaching the old LCC boundary, but now is my much preferred option for the necessary Lea crossing Same here-although I have proposed that it be called Bow & Canning Town instead of Poplar & Canning Town.

Just to give a "state of play" as far as I can judge. I think "Hexham & Morpeth" and a divided Ponteland have been pretty comprehensively rubbished and will be dropped. I think the Tories' three-seat Northumberland is probably a non-runner because of knock-ons. There are three cross-Tyne possibilities: Blaydon/Newburn, Tyne Bridge, Hexham & Blaydon. All have disadvantages & I cannot forecast which will win. The Blaydon/Winlaton split is ridiculous and will be dropped, surely? In the south, Yarm will stay with Stockton. There will be a Middlesbrough & Thornaby. Hartlepool will be divided owing to a failure of anyone to mount a serious campaign against it. Teesdale will be united.

Duly noted. I guess I was posting what I usually want to see, which is the composition of seats as components of LAs rather than visual maps. My Stockton Central doesn't cross the Tees though, the boundary runs alongside the river from Teesmouth all the way to the regional border.

Some maps of what I hope (but do not expect) to be the final proposal. I've come to basically accept the commissions proposals for Northumberland and North Tyneside. Big changes to basically everything south of the Tyne. Somewhat unhappy with a few constituencies, but mostly happy and a big improvement on the commissions proposals. Ashington and Berwick Hexham and Morpeth Blyth and Cramlington Tynemouth Wallsend and Benton Newcastle West Newcastle North East Tyne Bridge Blaydon Jarrow and Felling South Shields Sunderland North Sunderland West and Houghton Sunderland South and Peterlee Washington and Chester-Le-Street Consett and Stanley Durham Bishop Auckland Billingham and Newton Aycliffe Hartlepool Stockton Middlesbrough West and Thornaby Middlesbrough East and Eston Redcar
