I know little of Iranian electoral matters, but seeing that on 26 February the country will be elected the 88 seat Assembly of Experts that may well end up choosing the next Supreme Leader of Iran, along with voting in a new 290 seat Islamic Consultative Assembly, it felt like a thread was long overdue and something we should be discussing. Background reading, via Wikipedia, here and here.

Yes, but in Iran these things are relative. How free is this one compared to previous contests?

Iran should bring its democracy into the 21st Century - have a second chamber which is mostly-appointed but with 92 seats reserved for hereditary sheiks and 26 seats reserved for imams.

If one wishes to see Reformists rather than Principlists gain the upper hand in Iran - and given the result in 2013 Presidential election, there's every reason to think that's what a majority of the electorate want - then I guess the Pervasive Coalition of Reformists are the ones to pull for in the Consultative Assembly elections. With the Assembly of Experts, it'll be Rouhani's own Friends of Moderation electoral list. I gather that the usual game of silly buggers has been going on with candidate qualification issues if thats an indication. Of the 801 candidates who put themselves forward for the Assembly of Experts election, the Guardian Council of the Constitution made the following rulings: - 166 qualified to stand
- 207 were disqualified from standing
- 118 did not meet eligibility criteria
- 158 withdrew themselves
- 150 failed tests
- 2 withdrew for unknown reasons

Or in other words a total farce.

Actually, the nuclear deal that was done was substantially thanks to us and the Americans - in particular to Obama facing down Netanyahu's idiotic posturing against the deal, and the GOP's ludicrous ranting for that matter also.

The nuclear deal was welcome, but a very long time in coming - Iran began making serious overtures in 2003. The main effect of the American-orchestrated hate campaign against the Iranians has been to sustain the regime in power by making all dissent tantamount to treason.

I certainly hope history records that progress only began once the loathsome Clinton creature left the state department and was replaced by someone with an agenda other than shameless self promotion.

Claims of that sort are odd because it isn't as though the 'Reformists' are anything other than an integral part of the regime, if not always (admittedly) a particularly highly favoured part.

Oh absolutely, if they weren't they wouldn't be allowed to stand for election. Pulling Iran away from the hard liners needs to be done gradually lest it cause a major backlash.

Yes, but in Iran these things are relative. How free is this one compared to previous contests? According to my sources, when Ahmedinejad was first elected, he garnered many votes in distant rural areas, where many were unaware that there had been an election, let alone that they had voted. Second time the turnout in those areas was in excess of 100%.

Assembly of Experts People's Experts (Reformist) - 15 seats Friends of Moderation (Reformist) - 14 seats Combatant Clergy Association (Principlist) - 8 seats Society of Seminary teachers of Qom (Principlist) - 7 seats Pervasive Coalition of Reformists (Reformist) - 2 seats
So, broadly, moderates won 31 seats and traditionalists won 15 seats, which might be interesting if they are called upon to elect the next Supreme Leader before 2024.

According to fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Élections_législatives_iraniennes_de_2020it ended ~ 17 Ref. ("Friends of Hashimi" [=Rafsandjani]) : 73 Ind. : 200 Cons., the opposition boycotting, of course. Apart from an OverThrow of the Islamic Revolution by another one the coming chamber could come Conservatives contra Conservatives: Those supporting vs. those opposing an AtomicDeal...

Today will have happened the RunOff for 11/290 seats, what will naturally not alter much/anything.
