agree, it may piss me off that people with clear party allegiance describe themselves as independent, but it happens all the time. My criticism would not be that it was some sort of dirty trick, simply that it was dishonest Should have left it blank. I would prefer that parish council ballots had no space for description as you get a mix of candidates who may have party allegiances elsewhere (eg on the borough/county council) who don't want to bring politics into a parish ballot "misusing" 'independent' instead of leaving it blank. Plus the confusion when there are actual formal borough Independent Groups and Independent Group backed candidates. Eg, I know what parties almost all my Town Councillors are members of, but none of them put anything on their parish ballots, even if they were standing for a party at the borough election at the same time.

Dirty doings in Clowne (Bolsover District, Derbyshire), concerning a PC election due 16th February. It's alleged that to defeat an independent candidate, Labour have declined to nominate a candidate under their own colours, and instead are naming one of their own, but describing him as "independent". Local LibDems are angry. www.nedbd-libdems.com/news/clowne-parish-councillors-questioned/It's enough to make a horse laugh.

Prescot (East) in Knowsley - Green Party gain from Lab
Green Party 270, Lib Dem 211, Lab 138
New council: Lab 16, Green Party 1
A surprising result, given that Prescot has a long history of electing Lib Dems, although not in the last few years

They have never quite gone away at TC level, and of course won three Prescot seats in the "redrawn" Knowsley last year (and fairly comfortably)

We do not seem to have posted a result for Southborough Town Council from Thursday Feb 9th. Not altogether surprising- pretty boring really. But for the record Kinghorn (Con) 444 (60.3%) Lear (LD) 295 (39.7%) Long time a coming- I began to think someone had taken the votes home to count.

There is another political by-election on Thursday, 23 February 2017 - which could give back overall control of the town council to the Conservatives. Wellington (Rockwell Green) in Taunton Deane Caused by the resignation of Bill Sparrow (Lab) for personal reasons - he has reportedly also resigned from the Labour Party Candidates: Lab, Lib Dem, Con and No Description 7 May 2015: 1 Con, 1 Lib Dem and 1 Lab - unopposed Current Council (based on 2015 Statements of Persons Nominated): Con 8, Lib Dem 3, Lab 2, No Description 1, Vacant 1 but the town council website shows: Con 7, Lib Dem 3, Lab 2, Independent 2, Vacant 1 Apparently a planning application for 200+ new houses in Rockwell Green was submitted in January, so the by-election is perfect timing www.aroundwellington.co.uk/200-houses-for-rockwell-green/
