Also coming up are the Law Commission's recommendations on electoral law (was expected January but may be delayed). At some point soon the Electoral Commission will produce the spending figures by candidate for the 2015 general election.

I might have a data dump in store if I can get my hands on the 1970 notionals calculated for ITN in Feb 74.
Does anyone know who took part in their election night programme other than Peter Snow (and perhaps Fred Craig)? Most of them will have long since left ITN or might have died by now. I don't have ITN's election handbook for the time and it's not currently available on Amazon.

Not for the BBC but whilst having a look through the various elections looking for Ceredigion declarations I found the BBC's election archive site that has PDF's of the Radio Times for each of the elections since 1923 and in the February 1974 edition it has a list of the new constituencies and which way the BBC believe they could have gone (including some useful similarity comparisons). The Radio Times for the February 74 election can be found at downloads.bbc.co.uk/historyofthebbc/1974-2-pages.pdf

The Electoral Commission formally opens the registration of campaigns for the European referendum on 1 February. At some point they will have to decide which will be the official 'leave' campaign. Probably not next month, but that will be a big contentious decision when it comes round.

I've received an email from former forum member hullenedge : Also: He's sent me two attachments "Met Counties 73-81" and "Yorks CB 45-72". These attachments are both RTF files which I'm very happy to forward on to anyone who is interested.

It's disappointing to learn that the ITN notionals for 1970 don't exist, but it will save me time searching for them. I consider myself very fortunate to have been able to trace the BBC notionals at least. It is intriguing that hullenedge mentioned that Richard Rose compiled them. I'd been informed by Clive Payne of Nuffield College that it was Michael Steed who did so. Yes, as some of the forum are already aware I'm an Andrew, as are numerous forum members, hence part of the reason for my nom de plume.

US elections. I can sit down and look at the Electoral Commission stuff another day. This. The US primaries are a contemporaneous event (and could be political dynamite too). The dump is something more mundane (though interesting for the psephologically-inclined) and can be delved into at any time.

I have often thought there are two main types of contributors to this forum. In one group you have those who like to debate, joke, argue etc. In the other group you have those who prefer to focus on technical matters - spreadsheets, data, notionals, maps, polls etc. Hence the separate annual Personality and Technical Contributor awards. There is a great deal of overlap between the two camps amongst a lot of us but it's clear which one hullenedge is most at home with. The best thing to do is to focus on what you're best at and steer clear of any aspects you're not comfortable with - there will always be like-minded people whatever aspect of politics interest you. I hope you'll be back.
