Just a late night/early morning thought, but if the Conservatives were to upset Plaid in Conwy we'd have a clean sweep of women candidates elected this week.

Late night/early morning thoughts should be a bit more interesting than this. As in what you really think of the Labour by-election loss, for example.

Late night/early morning thoughts should be a bit more interesting than this. As in what you really think of the Labour by-election loss, for example. Sorry you weren't interested by a small statistical quirk. As for the Dorset result, not surprised in the least; a consistently marginal Division, won by a perennial candidate (and former Labour Councillor for the Division). A few things spring to mind - what caused the successful candidate to leave Labour after her 2009 defeat, winning a seat on 29% of the vote as happened in 2013 hardly suggests it's a stronghold Division, and I suspect our days of being competitive in Dorset South generally are in the distant past/distant future (don't forget we didn't take the Parliamentary seat until 2001, apparently thanks to some Billy Bragg inspired tactical voting, having fallen short in the 1997 landslide). Of potentially more signifance is the Bridgend result which, at face value, bodes well for next year's Assembly elections. But if we are in the business of cheap shots what do you really think of UKIP's collapse of nearly 10% and nearly 300 votes? Hardly stellar when you're supposed to be storming the country is it?

I don't know why Clare left Labour, but she has proved to be a very popular and active candidate for us here since. This is largely a vote for a popular local campaigner with a well organised local party supporting her. It should make next year's Weymouth & Portland elections very interesting.

It seems that the United Kingdom Independence Party candidate in Ogmore Vale was ineligible in any event as she is an employee of the local authority.

Interesting that both the Independent candidate in Ogmore Vale who lost and the Green candidate in Dorset who won were both previous Labour councillors for the same wards/divisions .

When was the last Green gain from Labour in a council by-election, out of interest? I think we could be going back to before the 2010 GE.......

They were byelections and there were no regularly scheduled elections in Lancaster on that date, although it was European Parliament election day.

Ah, yes - I remembered those after I posted But as you say that was still an "election day" of sorts - when was the last "stand alone" by-election?

I can't find any other Green Party gains from Labour in byelections since 1996.

Let's face it, Green by-election gains aren't exactly numerous from anyone Which makes yesterday's result all the more pleasing.

There was a by-election on Thursday for the Slade Lode ward of Chatteris Town Council (within Fenland District Council) where the Conservative candidate won with 156 votes against a Liberal Democrat on 135.
There were no nominations for the three ward vacancies at the elections on 7th May 2015 so the Town Council requested interest ahead of co-option on 2nd June. Five residents put their names forward as candidates and three were initially selected. However one declined on the night and so one of the two initially rejected was then selected.
At the meeting on 1st September the Clerk announced one of the Councillors initially selected had sent an e-mail resigning and the process of finding a replacement was started. Obviously 10 (I believe) residents requested an election.
I have been unable to find details of either an election or Councillors being returned unopposed in 2011. There was an election in 2007 with 7 candidates, 3 Conservative, 3 Liberal Democrats and one Labour when 2 Conservatives and one Labour were elected. The voting figures were:
Elected: Conservative 250, Conservative 227, Liberal Democrat 225 Not elected: Conservative 221, Liberal Democrat 195, Liberal Democrat 189, Labour 95
The results of elections for the Slade Lode Ward on the District Council have been:
2015 Conservative elected unopposed 2011 Conservative 301, Liberal Democrat 206, Labour 140 2007 Conservative 260, Liberal Democrat 223, Labour 67
The same three candidates contested both 2007 and 2011 whilst the Conservative was elected this time unopposed for a third term in May 2015.
