We can only hope that the military respect the results.

It's the kind of election where the election itself doesn't matter much, it's how the junta will react that's important.

It's pure gold how they wrote the constitution with a bizarre law for the obvious intent of preventing Aung San Suu Kyi becoming president.

Why the Burma/Myanmar title?
Are we going to have Germany/Deutschland, Italy/Italia, Austria/Österreich, Japan/Nippon, etc?

The point is that the change from Burma to Myanmar was made by a military dictatorship against the wishes of the population who prefer to retain the name Burma.
Anyone for 'Kampuchea'?

When was the Referendum in which the population singularly expressed their wish to retain the name Burma?

The number of instances when military dictatorships have allowed the populace a free vote on whether to veto one of their major decisions must be fairly low, I think.

It's interesting to see the old Colonial Office attitudes alive and well in modern Britain. Edit: That might make more sense as India Office rather than Colonial Office.

It's interesting to see the old Colonial Office attitudes alive and well in modern Britain. Is that a misplaced grumble about the use of Burma? If so why? WE can use Ceylon and Burma if we want to as 'our' name for that place as we do generally (Germany, Russia, Spain, Florence, Rome, Milan, etc.). What is wrong with that? They are at liberty to call themselves what they like and to change it as often as they like. No need for us to be in any way involved other than to bear it in mind so as not to confuse it with another place. This slavish sudden rush to new forms for the perfectly good Calcutta and Peking are very silly and absolutely unnecessary. Most foreigners have a different word and sound for United Kingdom, England and London and it doesn't bother me at all. When I am in Italy I refer to them as Regno Unito, Inghilterra and Londra without qualm or difficulty. Why should I rush to change to Myanmar when I already have a lifetime use of the more familiar and easier to remember Burma?

Not everyone agreed when Bombay was renamed Mumbai, and quite a lot of local people still prefer and use Bombay. It's not unusual to find both names used interchangably in the same piece of writing.

I have a mild preference for Myanmar but it doesn't especially bother me if people call it Burma. It wasn't many years ago that a head of steam was being developed for what used to be called a war of aggression against Myanmar (not Burma of course) but for whatever reason it was decided to extinguish it before things really got serious. Not that that has a lot to do with anything but I just wanted to put it on record. My 'grumble' was about the certainty of the British based assertion of what the people of Burma/Myanmar want. I don't know what the good people of Pathein and Taunggyi want just like they don't know what we want.
In case of interest I call them Calcutta and Beijing.

The silly thing about the Beijing / Peking thing is that they actually both represent the same sound in two different alphabets. But 99% of people say it as though they are English alphabets, which pinyin and wages-giles aren't. In English they both approximately sound like "pey-ching".
