Results of one of the most important/anticipated Indian state elections for a while are now out. And it turns out to be an unexpected landslide for the Grand Alliance (an awkward-for-personal-reasons coalition of the two main Janata Dal splinters and Congress)...
Grand Alliance 178 (RJD 80, JD(U) 71, INC 27) NDA 58 (BJP 53, LJP 2, RLSP 2, HAM 1) Left 3 (CPI(ML)Liberation 3) Independents 4
Actually a doubly unexpected landslide because early media reports somehow managed to fuck up really badly and reported that the NDA was well ahead. The BJP even started celebrating...

Are the CPI (ML) a group with their own newspaper? I've not come across them so far as I can recall.

With a name like that, my guess is they are Hardial Bains-style Maoists.

It isn't really a a vote against the BJP. I despair of the low quality of foreign reporting. Rather it's an increasingly typical vote for regional parties to run the state. In this case the Janata Dal, but there are regional parties almost everywhere now.
The BJP needs to work at gaining allies among the regional parties to prevent the upper house obstructing government. However understandably most regional parties oppose on principle whoever is in power in Delhi, in order to defend their own privileges, or for the more trusting, to defend the interests of their state. What they can't always do is transfer this local support into national elections.

In this case the Janata Dal, but there are regional parties almost everywhere. Well it's hardly a bleeding ringing endorsement for the BJP. On that logic, the General Election results in Scotland was not a vote against Labour.

Interesting thought. At what point can we anticipate an actual separatist movement? 1947.

Interesting thought. At what point can we anticipate an actual separatist movement? Oh there are plenty across India. Generally they spend most of their time getting shot by the army.

I didn't realise Bains was Indian until just now. I thought he was Canadian because of the Canadian Communist Party connection.
