On the subject of Bruce Campbell let this thread about Oldham politics not end without someone mentioning that said former Member for Oldham West's later career as a judge ended in farcical disgrace when he was convicted of smuggling. Don't put Smuggling down, the Wemyss economy is 30% Black. Of all crimes it is the one with the lowest opprobrium amongst the general public, except for elements of drug smuggling.

Well, we shall see. I think there are a few people who now view Jarvis less favourably, for sure. The point is that it will be raised as an issue - and linked with Iraq and other aspects of liberal interventionism, which most party members are clearly against.Iraq undoubtedly made an impact in David Miliband losing. Can we assume that the status of the Spanish Civil War volunteers within the labour movement has declined?

I'm not sure if you could call that liberal interventionism...

I don't see a great deal politically between mboy and myself. Oi! Watch it! Tbh that's mostly because lots of the debate in recent months here has been on liberty issues, and not on, say, land taxation or constitutional reform...

I'm not sure if you could call that liberal interventionism... Some at least were liberal interventionists, but sadly found out that not everybody fancied intervening for liberal or democratic values.

Is there any doubt that Ed Miliband would have voted for the invasion of Iraq if he had been an MP in 2003?

Is there any doubt that Ed Miliband would have voted for the invasion of Iraq if he had been an MP in 2003? Ed would have voted against, and no-one has ever suggested any different - he was teaching at Harvard at the time, but was known to be against. Indeed, David M knew this - remember him trying to stop Harriet Harman from clapping when Ed said that it has been a mistake in his acceptance speech? In general, he is not enthusiastic for liberal interventionism - he has expressed that view many times and other than Libya his votes indicate his stance. And he has strongly criticised the lack of post-invasion support offered to Libya by the Tories.

Does anyone know what the turnout was by ward? I sent an email to the council but they haven't replied yet.

And based on the result it was a fairly safe bet Labour "carried" every ward, though it would be interesting to know where UKIP ran them closest (Chadderton, probably?)

Is there a date for when each party declares what they spent on the by election? Yes - it was Saturday 9 January, 35 calendar days after the election result was declared.
